Description

This is where it all began. The 2016 is the inaugural vintage of the Wolta Wolta collaboration, pressed into the very first German oak fuder that arrived in the Clare Valley on Valentine's Day, 2016.

Ten years on, this wine is defying the laws of ageing. As Erni Loosen noted in our recent tasting, the 2016 is a "Benjamin Button" wine - it remains incredibly fresh, showing almost no colour development and none of the heavy petrol characters often seen in aged Australian Riesling. It is living proof that extended lees aging (24 months) doesn't just build texture; it preserves youth.

On the nose, it is lifted and complex, displaying lemon balm, white peach, and orange oil, layered with a subtle, savoury nuance of camembert rind and gentle spice. The palate is linear and tightly focused but glides with a cashew cream texture that sits beautifully against the distinctly wet slate minerality.

It is a piece of history that is drinking sensationally right now. This wine has never been released before and it has many years still ahead of it. It's a rare treat to see this wine in its peak and it only took a decade to get here.

"There’s a sticker on the bottle that says $170 so this may be a museum release. More on that later. This has gloss and shine, a slip and slide of lemon-lime, a sizzle of sherbetty, orangey tang in the midst, green apple, hazy, yes, and some cumquat and mandarin juice going on. It shows some gingery elements, a crackling and lively thing with spice and friskiness in tow. Yes, development, but metered. It’s in a great place."

Jim Barry

Jim Barry Wines is a family affair in the Clare Valley.

Founded by one of SA's most influential wine figures, this producer has been one of the most acclaimed in the region since it began in 1974.

They focus primarily on traditional Clare Valley varieties, with a myriad of laser-sharp Rieslings, powerful Shiraz and intense Cabernet blends making up the foundations of the range. With a sprawling range including everything from super-premium to top value, they are considered a cornerstone of the Clare with classic wines that develop beautifully in the cellar given time.

Now, with the third generation of Barrys - Sam, Tom and Olivia - now in charge of the winemaking, marketing and business development, there is a new energy about the brand and there are plenty of exciting new things on the horizon.
