Description

Alan Varney’s Fiano is a slightly offbeat rendition that prioritises texture over simple zip. Sourced from Langhorne Creek, the fruit benefits from cool nights that keep the natural acidity vibrant and tight.

The winemaking is where it gets interesting: 24 hours of skin contact followed by wild fermentation in seasoned Burgundy barrels and stainless steel. With hyper-oxidation and frequent lees stirring, the result is a nutty, savoury wine with a serious crunch. A bright citrus and grapefruit core is wrapped in exotic layers of candied ginger, lemongrass, and tropical fruit.

The twang of phenolic bitterness on the finish makes it a fantastic food wine, with enough weight for rich pork dishes yet plenty of freshness for seafood. If you’re after a small-batch white with character and a bit of an edge, this is a total winner.

"A warmer year and a riper wine than the notably cool-fruited (and good) iteration last year... real energy and crackle that works in concert with the acid line and in balance with the textural feel. Lovely wine, and with impressive length to it."
- Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "On skins for 24 hours, then wild fermented in old oak barrels, with two months in wood. A warmer year and a riper wine than the notably cool-fruited (and good) iteration last year, with white stone fruit, pomelo, spiced apple tart, pickled ginger, young sage and nutty, fluffy leesy notes. Some green almond, too. There’s makrut lime leaf on the palate, notably so, giving it real energy and crackle that works in concert with the acid line and in balance with the textural feel. Lovely wine, and with impressive length to it." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

“This is a textural yet vibrant wine with pretty aromas of stone fruits & citrus against a background of green tropical fruits and candied ginger. Hints of exotic spices and lemongrass on the palate stands up nicely to the tight acid line. Matches beautifully with seafood and cuts through richer pork based dishes”– Alan Varney, Winemaker

Varney Wines

Varney Wines began with just a "tonne for fun" for Alan Varney to play around with over a decade ago.

He took his years of experience working at top South Australian wineries, including time spent at Orlando Wines, Longview Vineyard and over a decade as senior winemaker at d’Arenberg, and poured his skills into crafting a style of wine that he and his friends and family could enjoy.

The side gig became a full-time obsession, leading to Alan purchasing a dilapidated property at the Gateway of McLaren Vale to house a tasting room alongside his wife Kathrin’s restaurant, Victor’s Place. A sustainable modern winery was built and their first commercial release was unveiled. The wines have been taking off ever since culminating with Varney being named James Halliday's Best New Winery in 2021.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
