Gentle Folk: 2022 Different Drop Avant-Garde Producer of the Year

Gareth and Rainbo Belton are the Gentle Folks, both in name and in sensibility. They are gentle, soulful people farming grapes with an organic and sustainable approach whilst crafting some of the most legitimately exciting and exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the Adelaide Hills.

The ephemeral category of 'natural wine' has been the most misunderstood wine trend of the last decade, so much so that it has lost much of its meaning. 'Natural' wines - at their base - are supposed to be the purest representations of the people and places that make them. At their best, they are incredibly pure and vibrant, often memorable and totally original things to taste or drink with gusto. And that is exactly what you get with the Gentle Folk range.

These are organically-farmed wines that cover multiple sub-regions across the Adelaide Hills. There are no additions during the winemaking process, save for a splash of SO2 at bottling to keep the wines pristine as they travel from the Beltons' home, to yours.

The single site Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays are exceptionally well-produced. Chardonnay, in particular, is becoming something of a strong suit for Gareth, as he finds great freshness, drive and beautiful textures with this variety. The ever-expanding range of Village wines, perfectly capture the elegance of the region. And their loveable range of spring releases (Vin de Sofa, Rainbow Juice et. al.) offer great easy-drinking with plenty of personality.

The worlds of fine wine and natural wine collide in the Gentle Folk range. Over 2022, the Beltons rose to the very upper echelon of Australia's lo-fi wine scene. This small family business is definitely one to watch in 2023.
