Gary Farr is one of our most influential minds in the pursuit of world-class Australian Pinot Noir. Farr established his legendary Sangreal vineyard in the Moorabool Valley in 1994 after striking out on his own after leaving his long-time position at Bannockburn Vineyards. Sangreal's sister vineyard, Farrside, was planted in 2001. It was the beginning of a wine producing legacy that would eventually cause the late, great Len Evans to dub By Farr "Australia’s best pinot."
Today, these are two of the most collectable Pinot Noirs in the country. The 2017 release may be the most anticipated release in the label's history.
Gary's son Nick Farr now makes the lion's share of the decisions in the family cellar. Nick has a razor-sharp winemaking mind and the benefit of a lifetime spent getting to know every vine on the By Farr estate.
We were lucky enough to taste through the new Pinots with Nick, as well as the stunning 2018 Chardonnay and Viognier. When he speaks on the 2017s, he doesn't talk in terms of 'best ever vintage'. Rather, he speaks of how he sees the full expression of each site in the 2017 vintage.
"Vine maturity is really the big difference we are seeing. There's no substitute for it. Sangreal has looked like Sangreal for a few years now, but we are only really just seeing Farrside come up to that level. The 2017 Farrside shows all the power and presence that I want to see from that vineyard. And for me, 2017 is the quintessential Sangreal - ethereal and elegant with great length and drive."
