2021 Murdoch Hill Artisan Series Apollo Pinot Noir
95 points
"Developing an established style that is both fragrant, seemingly delicate to start, before it launches into a display of some serious pinot grunt. A bit of a chameleon. Cloudy, crimson-red colour. A super-pretty floral attack on the nose with cranberry, redcurrant, violet and spice. Slips into another gear on the palate, deep and concentrated, with a developing thread of charry, toasty oak. Will reward further with moderate ageing." - Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

"When siphoning amidst the pantheon of the country's greatest grenache it is important to take time to let wines unwind. And so it is that I write on the 2nd day after opening. Was clunky. Now, a swan! From the cherished Smart Family vineyard. Cherry amaro, bergamot, thyme, lavender and a whiff of mint, rather than (mercifully) eucalyptus. Some malty oak could be shifted. Sweeter than the ‘19, with a skein of freshness and bunchy (20%) tannins tucking in the exuberance. Expansive. The broader of the siblings. Long and juicy. Delicious." - Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points
"A warmer year like this seems to have proven beneficial to this sturdy, ferruginous and late-ripening variety – a wonderful one, from Italy's Campania region where it is known as the 'Barolo of the south'. Make no mistake, it is as emblematic of our vinous future as grenache, despite being a relative arriviste. If you like savoury wines laden with dried tobacco, graphite, black cherry and licorice, harnessed by tannins of mettle and stridency like few others, here's your ticket to ride!"" - Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)

"From the estate vineyard in Briarty Road, crushed and destemmed to large wooden vats, 4 days cold soak, pressed to French oak (30% new). Intense varietal fruit of cassis/blackcurrant. The vinification was precisely framed to maximise the fruit but not extract too much, especially tannins" - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Fruit sourced from 3 different vineyards. All parcels fermented with cultured yeast, 13–21 days on skins, basked pressed to new and seasoned French puncheons and barriques (20% new). Matured 18 months in oak on full lees. Durif re-imagined, courtesy of cool-climate elegance (Beechworth) mixed with a dose of generosity (Rutherglen) that needs to be tasted by every drinker who was ever scared witless by the grape. This is not scary, rather it's brilliantly delivered as a serious wine of some beauty: aromatic, blueberry, plum, dark chocolate and spice all lifted, fresh and plush. Bravo." - Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Hand-picked, destemmed, wild yeast-open fermented, matured in French oak (10% new) for 18 months. Plucks the bass strings here in a full-bodied, black-fruited wine with ripe tannins. Thoroughly enjoyable." - James Halliday (The Weekend Australian)
