Description

The Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale typically produces a softer, more approachable style of Shiraz.

Brothers Duncan and Peter Lloyd are making the most of the regional characteristics here to deliver a McLaren Vale Shiraz that can be enjoyed immediately, as opposed to the more hulking full-bodied styles that look best with a few years under their belt.

This is made with very little interference from the boys - the fruit quality doing all the work to create a ripe yet easy-drinking Shiraz which is very difficult to put down.

McLaren Vale Shiraz 101 and just unbeatable value!

"Oh-so-easy to swallow if that wasn’t forbidden."
- 95 pts, James Halliday (The Weekend Australian)

"Perfumed, nutty, meaty, black fruit. Quite ferrous, but also floral. Lovely wine."
- 94 pts, Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Whilst McLaren Vale is not a large region it is geologically diverse. The Blewitt Springs sub-region is known for deep sandy soils on yellow clays. Shiraz typically ripens later here than other parts of McLaren Vale and displays different characteristics. The sandy soils typically produce shiraz of lifted dark fruit, floral and meaty notes, the tannin is fine yet chalky and the wines are often medium bodied rather than full.
Dark yet glossy fruits, sweet herbs, demerara sugar and stained cherry juice. Medium bodied and savoury textured , plush sweet fruited palate , fine and long , nice density of tannin, unfurling layers of flavour, mulberry and cherry juice, dark spice, little smoky and incense, cured meat and a little gravelly texture to finish.

95 points - "Deeply coloured; full, rich flavours of velvety black cherry, blackberry and spice all-sorts, with tannins so round they disappear in the black fruits. Oh-so-easy to swallow if that wasn’t forbidden." - James Halliday (The Weekend Australian)

94 points - "Perfumed, nutty, meaty, black fruit. Medium to full-bodied, again quite umami with some nori flavour, choc-hazelnut and juicy dark cherry, dry spice, fleshy and creamy tannin, good length with it. Quite ferrous, but also floral. Lovely wine. I often ponder the absurdity of assigning scores to wines, so this is either 93 or 94 points. I can’t quite decide." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

    Give time in cellar

Good, but tannins need a few more years of cellaring to settle, then it will earn the high points rating given.

    Delightful drop!

Full bodied, nice slightly softened tannins. Aromatic pepper and spice. Everything you expect from solid Shiraz.

    very disappointing

This wine supposedly won a major, I mean, a major Trophy last year. I subsequently bought 6 bottles, but having finished 2 now, I can propose that these bottles are not what was shown in that wine competition, no way!!! I feel had. Normally wine competitions are are good guide, but this example, suggests they have inserted a special barrel and bottles for the comp, and bottled for retail other barrels. Yes, this is a $20-25 bottle of shiraz, but it ain't a silver medal winner. Too green, too herbaceous. 85-86 points at best

Dune

Duncan and Peter Lloyd are the latest generation of Lloyds (of Coriole fame) to make wine in McLaren Vale.

Growing up immersed in the hotbed of food and wine culture that is McLaren Vale, the boys have now partnered up to start their own wine project with a stunning vineyard in Blewitt Springs as the centrepiece.

The grapes are farmed organically, the wines are made with a gentle touch, but rather than let the 'minimal intervention' philosophy hem them in with dogma, the boys are free to tinker and blend as they see fit.

These are fantastic, energetic wines that have set a cracking pace with only a few vintages under the brand's belt. Keep your eyes peeled for what's next for the brothers Lloyd.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
