"It’s the sheer graceful power of the thing that’s so beguiling, as it noiselessly swoops in, catching you in the updraft of its immense wingspan. By any measure, this is a great wine."
- Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

There are few wineries in Australia with as clear a vision as Yangarra.

Their commitment to producing world-class, Australian-grown, Rhone-style wines is second to none. With their remarkable, biodynamic McLaren Vale vineyard and the formidable winemaking skills of Peter Fraser, Yangarra is one of the most exciting wine ventures in the country.

Their High Sands Grenache is simply a wine to behold. It has been compared to the great Grenache wines of Chateauneuf du Pape, iconic wines like Rayas and Beaucastel. This release of the High Sands marks another step forward in the assertion of truly great Australian wines on the world stage.

This release takes pride of place at the top of the Australian Grenache pantheon. If you want to see the very best Grenache that Australia has to offer, the High Sands is a drinking experience that will stay with you for many years to come.

High Sands Grenache is the pinnacle of our estate. Reaching deep within the sandy soil, our prized 1946 old vines produce wines that balance intense power and complexity with fragrance and beauty.

2021 VINTAGE SUMMARY

A favourable growing season, with good winter rains, a mild flowering and fruit set period and continued spring rainfall. Vines showed good balance of shoot vigour and moderate berry size. The ripening period that began late January was very cool, with some welcome rainfall in mid-February. The cold nights and mild sunny days in March slowed sugar accumulation, resulting in excellent fruit ripeness and intensity.

WINEMAKING

Sourced exclusively from our special Block 31 (1.7 Ha). At 210m elevation, this is the highest section of the 1946 planted bush vine Grenache, which also has the deepest sandy soil. Hand-picked 24th March, selectively sorted in the winery. Destemmed and 50% whole berries retained. Wild yeast. Open fermenters with a long gentle maceration for a minimum of 21 days with a portion of extended maceration. No pressings are used in this wine. Matured on lees in a combination of old Austrian and French oak foudre, puncheon and ceramic eggs for 11 months. Certified Organic/Biodynamic.

98 points, "High Sands is always a landmark wine, a site-reflective icon of peerless husbandry and elaboration, but it can be imposing, needing time and reflection. This is different, though, finely tuned, lucid, silky and sophisticated, and feeling even more expressive
of place. A great, cool vintage, yes, with both depth and levity, but Pete Fraser’s quarter turns of the screw are also palpable. Fruits are red and black, ripe but with some tart wild tension, dusted in heady Baharat spicing, the heartbeat of old-vine power pulsing insistently within. Flavour descriptors feel ineffectual, though. It’s the sheer graceful power of the thing that’s so beguiling, as it noiselessly swoops in, catching you in the updraft of its immense wingspan. By any measure, this is a great wine." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

98 points, "Medium ruby-red with a bright purple tone. Raspberry, Turkish Delight and Chinese five spice aromatics. Palate is seamless and silken: red fruits, exotic spices, dry earth and rose petals all flow across the palate, all entwined with a fine net of acidity and tannin that lifts and drives it. The never-ending finish is a chorus of fruit and spice with the finest grained but persistent tannins ensuring you keep returning to admire it." - Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

96 points, "Often the best grenache at this stellar site and certainly the most robust, without any sense of excess of heaviness. Sandalwood, campfire and almost pithy red cherry and amaro liqueur notes. Some tamarind and sarsaparilla. It’s not dissimilar to top Nebbiolo, both flavour-wise and structurally. The finish is juicy but tightly wound, auguring for a long future in the cellar. Drinkable now, but best from 2029." - Ned Goodwin (JamesSuckling.com)

94+ points, "Cherry, raspberry, biscuit spice and mint/menthol, saline too, with a rosy perfume. It’s a bold wine, and the spicy oak certainly shows some impact (especially after tasting the Ovitelli), there’s a lot of grip and flesh to tannin, and there’s something of a sizzled sage leaf flavour in the wine too. Maybe it’s a little bit warm in alcohol, and the tannin feels a little furry, though there’s no shortage of flavour and impact, and its length and power augers well for time in the cellar." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

    Superb Grenache

    What a wonderful Grenache!

Powerful fruit, spices & saline characters.

As Erin Larkin said " all grenache lovers have to try this Australian icon- despite its price".

    It is worth it!

    Good experience but expensive

Wine truely reflected the vineyard, very complex and need a fair bit of cellaring. Great to have if willing to spend, not so sure if the price tag is justified and named wine of the year by James Halliday.

Yangarra

Yangarra Estate is one of a small group of powerhouse wineries to raise its head from the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale. Their wines are made entirely from an amazing old bush vine single vineyard, with the 2016 Halliday Winemaker of the Year, Peter Fraser, pulling the reins as winemaker. They are a certified biodynamic wine producer, and have even been named International Winery of the Year, twice!

They specialise in varieties found in the Rhone Valley. In the reds, their Grenache is as good as any in the land and is truly world class, with Shiraz and Mourvedre not far behind. The same applies to whites, the Roussanne expressions from Fraser’s experimentation with ceramic eggs are some of the most interesting in the country. In time, each of the 13 Rhone varieties will be grown on the Yangarra block.

A premium benchmark for the Blewitt Springs sub-region, and one of the country's modern day icon producers.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
