Description

Peter Schell is regarded as one of the most influential winemakers in the recent renaissance of the Barossa Valley. Pete paved the way for a new breed of Barossa winemakers with stunning wines like this: his flagship wine, La Maline.

Made in only tiny quantities, La Maline is a more elegant side of Barossa Shiraz. Peter Schell does a barrel selection for this wine, from two parcels in the High-Eden subregion of the Eden Valley. With the deft touch we have come to expect from this producer, the fruit undergoes a wild ferment in large format oak (about 40% new) and sees a healthy dose of whole bunches and a small amount of Viognier for aromatic lift.

It is a pleasure to drink this wine. Finesse and intricacy combine effortlessly with the brooding power of the region. All in all, a beautiful wine.

Medium to full bodied – at this point unevolved – spiced black cherry and sour dark plum fruits on attack turn to red plum and raspberry fruits, the flavours and feel of pomegranate cocoa build towards the finish – beneath the tannin the palate is quite open knit, wood and bunch tannins are yet to fully integrate and drive the palate to a tight, fine finish. Elegant, cool feel.
All fruit is hand harvested. Fermented with indigenous yeasts in open oak and stainless-steel fermenters for between 12 and 21 days prior to pressing. Between 30-45 % of whole bunches were retained within the otherwise de-stemmed must. Around 2% whole Viognier fruit was included in the fermenters. Elevage was undertaken in French oak barriques and demi-muids, approximately 40% new, on light lees for 20 months prior to assemblage and bottling.

95 Points - "Good depth and hue of purple-ish colour, the bouquet fresh and minty, indeed a basket of fragrant herbs is there to sniff. The wine is elegant and medium-full bodied, with softly drying tannins and approachability. A wine of effortless power and style." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

95 Points - "Talk about nailing it. This slots straight into the realms of the glorious. It’s meaty, spicy, jammed with well-ripened fruit and just so well structured; so persistent. Plums and exotic spices, floral lifts, some undergrowth, some game. It feels filigreed; it feels certain. The complexity here, in a silken/seamless context, is right up there." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

97 Points - "Peter Schell's La Maline shiraz/viognier blend has always struck me as a Barossan wine with distinctly northern Rhône sensibilities. The fruit purity and depth scream of its antipodean roots, but the sense of mineral energy, tight granitic tannins and earthy amaro and spice-speckled aspects sends my hippocampus into overdrive remembering great Côte-Rôtie I've been lucky enough to drink. Whole bunches have been deployed in a masterly fashion here, and the wine is graceful but has a real sense of latent power, a wonderfully pure depth of plum and dark fruits and a long, detailed finish. Great vintage, too." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

97 Points - "Uses two shiraz parcels from the High Eden subregion, plus a dash of viognier. The wine soars like a butterfly, its shimmering wings racing from raspberry to cinnamon, reflecting the inclusion of 20-45 per cent whole bunches and vines up to 70 years old. Eden Valley’s answer to pinot noir." - James Halliday (The Weekend Australian)

Spinifex Wines

Spinifex are one of the 'New' Barossa's true pioneer producers. Husband and wife team Peter Schell & Magali Gely have extensive experience in southern France, which proves the inspiration for their unique wines made from predominantly Rhone varietals.

Spinifex was on the front line of the new wave of Barossa producers. Peter's wines brought a new sensibility to the region, they were lower in alcohol, concentrated but elegant, and balanced to perfection. He takes the art of blending into the realm of the virtuoso. There are few wineries who deliver refinement and poise from the Barossa Valley like Spinifex.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
