About The Wine
The Somos team tackle skin contact whites for the second time here.
This is a great example of a more smashable 'orange' wine than some of the more challenging examples on the market today.
The Verdelho fruit was grown biodynamically, all the fruit was fermented on skins before being split in two portions: the first went to barrel to spend time in oak on lees; the second stayed on skins for a huge six months before pressing giving a wild, gingery, exotic tweak to the flavours.
So much personality, so much drinkablity, so much value. A super offering from this great small McLaren Vale operation.
About Somos
The Somos wines are the product of two enthusiastic young winemakers - one Australian and one Mexican - looking to make interesting and contemporary wines from McLaren Vale.
Benjamin Caldwell and Mauricio Ruiz Cantu are the creative duo behind this exciting project, with the wines exported back to South & Central America as well as sold through just a handful of outlets and venues locally in Australia.The focus is on 'alternative' varieties from sustainably managed vineyards - their Aglianicos being of particular note.
Their unique wines are made with a deft touch, the resulting styles perfumed and balanced, bursting with energy and personality. Just minuscule volumes produced, but great fun to be had across the Somos range.

From The Producer
An orange wine from 100% Biodynamically farmed Verdelho, from a small vineyard in McLaren Flat. Picked twice, one early pick, one later riper pick. Destemmed and fermented on skins, 50% was pressed to old oak after 1 month and lees stirred fortnightly to build texture, 50% was sealed on skins for 180 days.
The resulting orange wine is vibrant orange in colour, unfined and unfiltered so the wine has an appealing cloudiness. Heaps of ginger spice, tangerine, orange peel, baked pears, and hints of toffee apple on the nose, with a compelling full palate, textural and soft with bright orange pith, mandarin crunch, and soft brioche and caramel notes.

My new favourite skin contact wine! Perfect for hot summer days. Bright, full of texture, zesty and easy drinking - I would definitely recommend this for newbies in skin contact wines.

The first drink wasn't my favourite but as I had more it grew on me. Works well with a nice curry, but not a wine that I would sit on the couch and drink of an evening.

An interesting wine with some pretty intense skinsy flavour. At first I didn't like it to be honest, but it grew on me as I continued drinking. There was a bit of mouse to it at the top of the bottle but it disappeared. Probably not my favourite amber wine but still worth a drink!

Warehouse Pickupis available from our Sydney warehouse in Ultimo, 2007. Just select Local Pickup at checkout. We are open 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Do I have to order in dozens? No, please mix it up! You can order wines in any quantity and variation you like. You can order 1 bottle or 50. We challenge you to make the ultimate mixed pack of wine!
Are there volume discounts? No, our pricing is designed to be the best in market already - no marking up and then discounting down! For very large orders (weddings, etc) we are open to negotiating though. Just give us a call.
Do we price match? Yes, within reason. Everyday low & consistent pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. If you see a price lower somewhere else let us know and we'll consider matching it. We'll even retrospectively issue you store credit if you have already purchased from us but you see a lower price somewhere later on. Our price match policy can be seen here.
Can coupons and discounts be stacked? No, only one discount or coupon can be applied to an order at once.
I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me? This means we are running low on stock of that wine. So for example, if the website will only allow you to add 3 bottles and no more, then that is all we have of that particular wine. The good news is we may be able to order more for you. Just contact us on 02 8376 8775 or hello@differentdrop.com and we'll organise the additional quantity for you.
Does Different Drop have a physical store? No. Just an a warehouse/office. We occasionally do events however, so sign up to our newsletter or follow us on instagram to stay in the loop.
Can I special order a wine you do not sell? If it’s doable, then we’ll make it happen. Just contact us directly via phone, chat or email and we’ll find out for you right away. Please note that in most cases special orders such as these will need to be in full case lots (6 or 12 bottles).
