Description

Cabernet Shiraz blends have not been the flavour of the month, the year, or even the past decade, but they are the backbone of the traditional Australian dry red.

Alex Head has gone into his Tardis and come up with a homely wine, at a crazy good price, full of rich dark fruit, baked earth characters, with a dense chunky mouthfeel and satisfying savoury rustic finish.

What is old is new again.

This very traditional Australian ‘Dry Red' style has been part of my heart for many years and literally reminds me of home when I get it in the glass! Bizarrely it was a chance conversation about Shiraz & Cabernet Sauvignon with Phil Lehmann which led me down a path of blending enlightenment. How do we make wine quality even better through the art of blending the two ‘hero' varieties of the Barossa? Well, believe it or not, there is a trick and roughly you need to find the point at which they don't fight each other! Lots of fine tuning… ;) Certainly, this is the best value, most traditional and emotional Barossan style within the portfolio. Thank goodness we never gave up on Cabernet!

94 Points - "79/21% cabernet sauvignon and shiraz; small open fermenters; wild yeast; 2-week ferment; matured for 10 months in French oak (10% new). This is all about cabernet sauvignon kicking up its heels in the Barossa Valley and making no apologies for doing so. There is an edge of authority to its expression provided by the firm tannins, shiraz ending any suggestion of excess force. Bargain on a grand scale." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

87 Points - "Mostly cabernet, some shiraz. Sweet spice notes, touches of mint chocolate in ripe red berries and a whiff of sweet, turned earth. Juicy in the palate, plush and supple, sweet-ripe fruit and licks of dusty-smoky tannin finishing things very dry and firm. Tannins come late, feel a bit too charry. Dry Red is right." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

    Fabulous barista red blend

A fabulous classic red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz which displays beautiful balance and smoothness with a long palette.

Flavors of spice, new oak and plum, with hints of licorice and tobacco.

    Highly recommend.

Head Wines

Alex Head has had what you might call a meteoric rise through the Australian wine industry. In his short career as a producer he has been heralded as one of the best Young Gun Winemakers, not only in the Barossa but the whole country.

With no formal training as a winemaker, the purity and balance inherent in the wines are amazing.

Alex has a passion for the old vineyards that populate the Barossa. With a keen eye for a good site, Alex has put together a formidable portfolio of vineyards which produce simply outstanding renditions of Shiraz and Grenache year-in, year-out. These are some of the most exciting wines in the Barossa.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
