Description

Duane Coates MW has probably drunk a lot of fine European wine in this time, and this may influence his winemaking, as there is a euro motif across his whole, brilliant-value, range of wines.

This is Adelaide Hills Riesling, not Clare or Eden, which is cooler and higher in altitude. So this not an incisive, acid-driven bone-dry example of Aussie Riesling but a silky, complex endeavour thanks to some natural ferments, barrel ageing and time on its yeast lees.

Alongside the pristine, zesty citrus and tropical fruit characters is a mineral drive and a dense breadth to the palate.

An exceptionally good value Riesling.

There has been a desire to add a Riesling to the Coates range for many years. But with such a breadth of styles within our winery and limited time the project had been on permanent delay. In 2019 it was decided to go ahead and finally add a Riesling to our line up. The established order of the Australian wine industry would suggest the Eden Valley or Clare Valley would be the logical place to source grapes. But Riesling is a cool climate variety with Clare Valley and Eden Valley having a far from cool climate growing season. As such, the fruit is sourced from a single vineyard in the Kuitpo region of the Adelaide Hills (which is where the Coates winery based). A cool climate location ensures that the grapes have an elegance of flavour and good natural acidity that we seek to preserve in the finished wine.

Light straw in colour, the nose shows restrained tropical fruits accompanied by lemongrass and kaffir lime zest. A lithe palate with plenty of citrus zing with guava and delicious floral notes leading into a long, crisp finish.

96 Points - "Hand-picked Kuitpo fruit. Natural ferment in old hogsheads (5+ years). Left on gross lees for 4 months. Minimal SO2 and zero adds otherwise, notably zero acidity, the bane of domestic riesling. Doing everything possible to avoid the ’dreaded’ kerosene notes of Oz riesling. An exercise in how to make riesling (too often shrill, battery acid-dry and brittle in this country) into a phalanx of optimally ripe fruit, the sort of juicy acidity that pulls the saliva from the back of the mouth with an elastic cadence and real textural intrigue. Class and complexity, the DNA. Kaffir lime, sure. Better, quince paste, tangerine, lemon meringue and a pungent mineral undercurrent. The older oak, servicing an expansive breadth that stains the cheeks. Thrilling length! Excellent wine." - Ned Goodwin (Halliday Wine Companion)

Astonishing white, the way of the future

I tried this a weekend after revisiting the outstanding Dr Edge Tasmania Riesling and courtesy of a comrade a grand cru Clemens Busch from Germany. One sniff of the Coates and I though I was back in the Rhine. The uber long, delicate tingling finish and and textured, almost slatey palate confirmed it - at about a fifth the price. Profoundly satisfying and a marker as to where Oz Riesling should head. With the Edge, the best new set style white I’ve tasted in over a decade. Great value too.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
