About

About This Wine

Arneis is one of our favourite white varieties, so consistently delightful and complex. It's home is Piemonte but we are seeing increasingly excellent examples in Australia.

Anyway, this is from its homeland - a dry but full-bodied wine with citrus oil and green apple characters and that almond, cashew nut element that is so true to variety.

The finish is all chalk dust and softish minerality. Cracking stuff.

About Monchierio, About Monchierio

Quite possibly one of Barolo's greatest under-the-radar producers, Monchiero owns vineyards in some of Barolo's most prestigious crus.

Farming 25 acres throughout the communes of Barolo and Alba, like so many Italian wine stories, they have generations of history farming and growing grapes, either selling the fruit, or making wine for personal consumption. In the 1950s, the brothers Remo and Maggiorino Monchiero started producing wine under their own family name.

They work out of small winery that was established in the 13th century and purchased by the brothers in 1982. Vittorio, son of Maggiorino, has since taken over and has eschewed the pressure to modernise, rather he pays homage, and respects the ancient traditions of the region.

A true family affair, with 3rd generation Luca, now working with his father, and younger brother, Stefano, soon do the same.

From The Producer

A white DOC wine which is ready in a few months, a juice of the grape with a good alcohol content, balanced, fruity, extremely pleasant. The apple aroma makes it an excellent accompaniment to antipasti, fish dishes and white meat. After the grapes have been pressed and the must separated from the peel it is left at a low temperature to produce a dry and aromatic wine.

The Wine Front

"Monchiero, you little champions, now bottling Arneis under screwcap. From 18 year old vines, planted close to Roero, but not in that area, as such. Green apple, almond, lemon zest, green herbs. It’s fresh, clean and has a subtle, and appropriate gustatory bitterness, maybe some green olive too, flesh and chalky feel, and a fairly long and textured finish. Allora! Lovely dry white." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
