About the Wine
Given our obsession with Mediterranean food, the great value white wines of the region are an underappreciated secret.
From the Catalan high country, this unfamiliar crew of grapes sings when paired with the clean, fresh and robust flavours of the region’s cooking. Think anchovies, bean salads, firm white fish and grilled vegetables.
Courtesy of its sun-kissed surrounds, this is textural white with a little more body. Lovely honeyed pear and yellow apple fleshiness mingles with herbally fennel, and just enough citrus zip to keep things fresh. If you love whites with both power and personality, Olbieta is a perfect place to start.
About Marco Abella
With family roots in the region dating back to the 15th century, the Marco family have had a long association with Priorat and the village of Porrera. Current custodians, Olivia and David re-established their family's winemaking legacy with the Marco Abella estate in 2004, working with old vine plantings dating as far back as 1910.
Their 30 hectares of vineyards are focused around the two red indigenous varietals Garnatxa and Cariñena, across 6 different plots: El Perer, La Mina, Solanes, La Mallola, Masos d’en Ferran and La Creu. Vineyards are farmed biodynamically, situated between 500 and 650 meters above sea level on different kinds of slate (known as llicorella).
The llicorella slate along with techniques like cold soaking of grapes and a focus on neutral concrete tanks, means these are Priorat wines that value freshness, finesse and elegance.
