About The Wine

The Beal & Co. Merlot is grown on Callum Beal's family vineyard in the Adelaide Hills.

The Merlot is his pride and joy. Every berry was destemmed, and fermented with indigenous yeasts, then left alone in oak for 18 months prior to bottling. He believes the Adelaide Hills can grow some great, smashable versions of the variety, but also serious renditions to turn heads too.

This is very much the latter - coming from steeply-planted 30 year old vines in the higher section of Callum's vineyard. It's a fuller, more structured and concentrated Merlot, with time in bottle seeing it drinking beautifully right now!

It's a lovely take on this  loveable variety from a young gun South Australian winemaker.

About Beal & Co.

Callum Beal is one of the younger generation rising stars of the Adelaide Hills wine scene.

As a sommelier-turned-retailer-turned-winemaker/grape-grower, Callum took the long way round to come back to his home of in the Hills. His parents own a small, picturesque vineyard in the Lobethal sub-region which supplies the backbone of his range.

His wines are about accessibility and slurpability. Made with a lo-fi sensibility but with a strong scientific backbone, his range is continuing to expand, taking in fruit from his neighbours and planting his own vineyard in the Hills with an eye toward the future.

Beal & Co is one of those names you should tuck in your Little Black Book. The wines are killer and offer great value for money. He is, without doubt, one of the names to watch in the region over the coming years.

From The Producer

The Merlot vineyard is 450m above sea-level on shallow rocky soils. The vines are planted on steep slopes and are 30 years old. Neudorf Valley is typified by its warm days, cool afternoon breezes, and cold nights during the ripening season. These site conditions cause a protracted ripening period and aid in producing high quality fruit.

DDS review

"Pretty spices, berry and dark stone fruits on the nose. On the pallet the aromas are met with darker berries and blue fruits. Savoury notes and lingering chalky tannins." - Callum Beal (Owner/Winemaker)

Love this vineyard, and the 2013 Merlot is only getting four stars so I can give the Beal & Co Little Red five.

    A really nice merlot

Bought to support bushfire appeal, didn't really have any expectations. Started really nicely, a little heavier than expected but definitely had the presence of plumb and earthy tones, finished a little sharper than expected but was delicious nonetheless.
