About the Wine
Chateauneuf-du-Pape is known for producing wines that are big on flavour and tannin, often needing decades of cellaring before they're ready to drink. It might be surprising, therefore, that there are some reds from this region that have more in common with grand cru Burgundy than with the Rhone.
The Clos Saouma Le Clos Arioso Chateauneuf-du-Pape Rouge sits in a comfortable place between Burgundy and the Rhone, with red-fruit and spicy flavours and a rich and silky texture that tap you on the shoulder rather than shouting in your face. While this wine is already eight years old, it will continue to develop for at least another 10 years.
About Clos Saouma
Mounir Saouma is one of the more interesting and perhaps controversial characters in modern French wine.
He is the owner of two domaines, along with his partner Rotem, cult negociant label Lucien Le Moine in Beaune where produces highly-sought-after Premier and Grand Cru Burgundies, and Clos Saouma where pursues his love for Chateauneuf-du-Pape with his own vineyards on some of the most prized terroir in the region. Unusual, to be sure, but the wines have massed a huge secondary market due to their imperial style and minuscule production.
