Description

One of the country's pre-eminent Riesling exponents here, unleashing an alt-styling of their pet variety.

The Alter Weg is a Riesling inspired by the 'old-school' winemaking methodology practiced by the great Germanic Riesling makers of the old world. This is first class, organically grown fruit fermented for a time on skins, then matured on lees in barrel for 10 months prior to release.

It's a powerful, potent Riesling with layers of textural intrigue. In this wine, the new world meets the old. An awesome expression of Frankland River Riesling that will blow your hair back.

95 points

"Consistently among the finest iterations of riesling in the New World."

- Ned Goodwin (JamesSuckling.com)

Alter Weg translates to the “old way” describing our approach to this Riesling.

Lightly golden colour supports the slightly riper tone and more oxidative approach to juice. Tangerine notes and a seductive saline morishness support the delicate aroma of spice and the juicy ripe citrus tones. Mineral yet juicy palate, initially a very slight reduction aroma of gun smoke/ironstone gives way to the fruitfulness and volume of this wine as it opens up. Saline and crystalline notes give freshness and brightness which is followed by a soft textural line that gives the wine a fullness and completeness. The tension of this wine masterfully balances the fruitful yet savoury palate with a deliciousness and mouth-watering finish from the fine well-rounded acidity. The barrel maturation gives the wine a notable roundness and fullness whilst in keeping with the fine line achieved by our organic Rieslings at Frankland Estate. A complex balanced Riesling that will gain further complexity with age.

95 points - "The Old Way.
Apple, lime, fennel, a little parmesan rind. Juicy, saline, cheese rind, nutty and kind of juicy, with some chalk dust grip, more of that nutty stuff, bright acidity, but fleshy too, with a whole lot of weight and lime zest on a finish of excellent length. Excellent. Frankland River via Rheinhessen. Complex and so good to drink." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

95 points - "Fine acidity, luscious fruit (in a riesling context), texture and length. What more do you desire? There is more: a little tug of phenolics, the openness on the palate yet slatey and reigned in by lemon-sorbet acidity. Moreish, a touch savoury and an excellent drink." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "Consistently among the finest iterations of riesling in the New World. Picked ripe. Wild fermented and aged in large format wood. Pithy, mid-weighted and textural, eking out a different groove across the palate with each sip, while riding a waft of phenolics as much as a skein of bright, maritime acidity for its push, pull and jittery length. Lemon squash, lime blossom, ginger and crushed granny smith. The overall impression is one of succulence over hardness. Lovely drinking. Drinkable now, but best from 2025. From organically grown grapes." - Ned Goodwin (James Suckling)

94 points - "The 2022 Alter Weg Riesling is all about texture and length. The wine is fermented and matured in barrel (11 months' élevage therein) and brings with it a tranche of exotic spices: clove, nutmeg, star anise, spearmint, green peppercorn, cheesecloth, preserved lemon, white flowers and jasmine tea leaves. This is excellent and intense. I was surprised to note that this one has not been reviewed by The Wine Advocate before—an important wine in Frankland River in the Great Southern, the home of great Riesling in Western Australia." - Erin Larkin (Wine Advocate)

    Great textural Riesling

This wine has a lot going on. Texture, concentration, length and a spine tingling acidity offset by a little residual sweetness.

Frankland Estate

Frankland Estate are one of the leading producers in the Frankland River region of WA. Family owned and operated since 1988, their major focus is on certified organically grown fruit that reflects its terroir rather than the hand of the winemaker.

Their cool climate Rieslings are regarded as some of the best in the region and the country with several single vineyard releases that could be a contender for Australia's Best Riesling.

Frankland Estate is cutting a mean wave through the industry and picking up a lot of recognition in the process.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
