Description

From the Schmitt vineyard in the Barossa sub-region of Vine Vale, this is a light and bright expression of Mencia full of verve and energy.

Fragrant and lifted on the nose with and tea leaves with floral notes of pink flowers and Turkish Delight. The palate is lush, with fine tannins, a fleshy texture, and a deep earthy character.

Australian Mencia may still be in its infancy, but if this wine is a sign of things to come, we are all in on it!

"Black is the abiding theme: black as night in colour, dark blackberries, black licorice, black Vegemite-yeasty savouriness. Generous and supple, it's all wrapped up in bold tannin."
- Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Lovely stuff. Easy drinking, supple flow, bolder expression of the variety...A sense of good energy to it all and the acidity is to the task of refreshing the palate each sip. Good gear.
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

The Wine
Dark cherry, blueberry, tea leaves and coconut over hints of dried herbs with just the slightest savoury undertone. Has a fresh and lively palate with red fruit and plush tannins. Smooth and delicious. Benefits from a little time to breathe upon opening. Organically grown and made (uncertified). Enjoy now or drink/cellar to 2027. Suggested serving temperature 15-17C.

The Winemaking
Hand-picked 17th March 2022 and made at CRFT winery in Carey Gully. Destemmed to an open-top tank for wild fermentation with around 2 weeks on skins. Then pressed to oak for wild malolactic fermentation and maturation for 11 months with occasional lees stirring. 100% French oak, all seasoned barriques 2yo+. Bottled Feb 2023. Vegan friendly

The Vineyard
Elaine Schmidt owns and farms the Mencía vines at Vine Vale (Barossa Valley). Organically farmed (uncertified) from the 2018/2019 growing season onwards.

Planted: 2012 (half grafted, half planted on own roots)

Soil: Deep sandy loam topsoil, over deep red clay subsoil.

93 Points - "Matured 10 months in French oak. A bold and fleshy wine, a new addition to the CFRT portfolio, with the promise of a second planting at the Rohrlach Vineyard in the Barossa also coming on stream soon. Black is the abiding theme: black as night in colour, dark blackberries, black licorice, black Vegemite-yeasty savouriness. Generous and supple, it's all wrapped up in bold tannin." - Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

92 Points - "While Adelaide Hills is seemingly the playground of CRFT, this comes from Vine Vale in Barossa Valley. Quite a lush and plush expression, lots of ripe cherry, blood orange, tobacco, sweet earth, vanilla cream and woody spices. Lovely stuff. Easy drinking, supple flow, bolder expression of the variety without typical crunch and savouriness but does a bit of those things in the mix of its more rambunctious vibe. A sense of good energy to it all and the acidity is to the task of refreshing the palate each sip. Good gear." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

91 Points - "Deep and rich ruby in the glass. Mulberry, thyme, and pepper spices jump from the glass. Lively and juicy on the palate with lashings of red and purple fruits interlaced with liquorice and pepper spices. Good length with soft tannins and a lick of refreshing acidity as it flows to the finish." - Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

    Interesting drink

You have to enjoy dark berries with a nice hit of tannin. Very worthwhile addition to anyone’s cellar. Cheers

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
