Back in 2004 when The Story began, Moyston Hills was one of the first vineyards to supply grapes for our Grampians Syrah. After only two vintages a larger winery saw the quality on offer and contracted the entire vineyard. Fast forward 17 years and the wheel has turned back in our favour and we were offered the option to lease it ourselves. We jumped at the opportunity and it is now our first fully self-farmed site. We are taking it back to its organic beginnings and pushing for the finest quality possible to deliver both a unique single vineyard Syrah and also some very cool climate Grenache and Mourvedre for our ‘Super G’ wine.

Moyston Hills is in the cooler, southern Grampians and is planted to the old St. Ethel clone of Syrah on reddish brown clay loams with significant amounts of quartz. The wines tend to exhibit bright, peppery, pure, lighter weighted syrah with savoury tannins. It is a great honour for us to be able to farm this vineyard and push it to greater heights. (INCLUDE OR EXCLUDE FOR LENGTH)

The 2022 Moyston Hills Vineyard Syrah is from another cooler season that avoided heat spikes and luckily avoided late season rains. Disease pressure was minimal and crops were lower than in 2021, which should have sped things up, but ripening seemed painfully slow, with sugars stalling in the high 11s and low 12s for most of march until a beautiful stretch of 30 degree days right at the end of the month which pushed us over the line.

Harvest was 31st March and 7th April for the two blocks, and flavours were beautiful along with ample natural acidity, and tiny berries. The bottom block was fermented with 50% whole bunches in open wooden fermenters, pumped over only as needed and left on skins for four weeks. The top block was destemmed and fermented in stainless. Elevage was in a mixture of old french puncheons and 3000lt foudre, for 11 months. A little less pepper than 2021, a little more red fruit than black, but beautiful savoury long tannins, and light, pure red berry flavours. The site is beginning to show signs of a truly unique and lovely terroir, as we put more effort into the viticulture and soil management.

94 points - "The Moyston Hills vineyard was the first Grampians vineyard that Rory Lane sourced fruit from. He now leases the vineyard and chooses to call the wine syrah because of its 'proper' syrah spice and perfume. It certainly projects plenty of the spicy stuff – pepper, fennel seed, bay leaf, rosemary – but there's more to laud. Works a fine-textured tannin riff through dark cherry, plum and dusty cacao, finishing with a lasting, gentle savouriness. Dances rather than glides. Delicious." - Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

93+ points - "It’s deliciously (black) peppery and ripped with bright, berried fruit. If you like Grampians shiraz/syrah you will love this. It’s medium-bodied, bunchy, savoury and just all-around adult, though the fruit is perfectly well ripened and velvety with it. Walnut-edged tannins pull the curtain on a terrific show if pepper and fruit." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

The Story

Rory Lane, the main man at The Story, didn't have an entirely conventional path to the wine world. With a degree in ancient Greek tragedy, comparative literature, and politics, he stumbled into winemaking and found he had more than a knack for it.

Since 2004, he's been tinkering with predominantly Rhône varieties in the Grampians, turning out some unique expressions from this Shiraz-heavy region. His winery is located in the city suburbs of Melbourne, not your typical winery setting, but it suits him down to a tee.

Rory's winemaking philosophy is to keep it relatively simple and hands-off. Grapes arrive, get gently processed, and then are left to their own devices with minimal interference. No additives, no excessive tinkering. Just good, solid, classic winemaking producing some exceptional value wines.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
