Description

This is something out there from the Billy Button camp!

Verduzzo originates from Friuli in North-East Italy, and it's pretty much an unknown quantity here. Jo Marsh, head-honcho at Billy Button, describes it as "The red drinker's white, a full bodied style with structured phenolics." which sums up the variety's character quite nicely.

This is a wonderfully savoury and structural wine with a completely unique set of flavours. Each iteration from Jo has been better than the last as she becomes more familiar with this variety. This vintage is no exception.

If you're looking for a food-friendly wine with a point of difference to wow your dinner guests, this is a great option.

Jo obviously has a thing for the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of North East Italy. Like Friulano, Verduzzo originates from the same Italian region. Jo knew very little about this variety before taking it on. What she did know was that it is a challenging variety to make because of its high phenolic content in the skin. Problem is, the flavour also exists in the skin, so how do you get the flavour out without making an excessively phenolic wine? Jo said, bring it on. What she discovered is that Verduzzo is a red wine disguised as a white wine. It is a wine not for the faint hearted, it is quite savoury with the phenolics giving the wine a firm structure that demands food, contrasted by an unexpected intensity of citrus and nashi pear fruit character. The fruit is sourced from the Antonello Vineyard at Buffalo Creek.

90 Points - "Hand-picked fruit was whole-bunch pressed to stainless steel. The free-run juice was fermented with selected yeast, the pressings fermented with indigenous yeast. Matured 9 months on full yeast lees prior to blending. High skin phenolics make this an especially challenging wine to make and sometimes drink. Savoury, wild and firm, it's no softie. Lantana, hay, dried apple, honeysuckle and parsnip earthiness combine to present a fascinating wine that absolutely demands food. A no-prisoners kind of wine, something to explore with an open mind." - Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

90 Points - "Dry style, interesting personality. Savoury at heart, as a white wine. Stonefruit and quartz, earth and orange, honeysuckle and dried apple. It's so dry it's grippy; it demands food. Those dried apple characters really push forward as it breathes but then, so too does the grippy dryness of it." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Billy Button

Billy Button is the charming Alpine Valleys based project of ubertalented winemaker Jo Marsh, now helped by her winemaker husband Glenn James and young winemaker Alex Phillips.

Billy Button focuses primarily on producing small batches of alternative varieties from good local growers in their small patch of Victoria. The team explores varieties that are rarely seen in the Australian landscape - you can find anything from Schioppettino to Verduzzo in this eclectic range.

Jo's gentle touch in the winery makes for beautifully balanced wines that show great texture and vibrancy. The Billy Button range is a little gem of North East Victoria. It's one of the more unique wine ranges in the country and the perfect place to begin your exploration of alternative varieties.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
