Description

There is plenty of Shiraz in the Yarra Valley but not too much Grenache and Carignan, two other popular varieties that often feature in Mediterranean red blends.

Giant Steps do have a little of all three of these varieties planted on their Sexton and Tarraford vineyards, and they lend this mid-weight, early-drinking red some real spiciness and herbal interest. The 2019 version of this wine won a Trophy at the 2021 Royal Melbourne Wine Show and was rated 95 points from Jane Faulkner at the Halliday Wine Companion.

It's both superbly lithe and eminently drinkable, this would be excellent value house red fit for all occasions.

2019 Giant Steps Yarra Valley Syrah Carignan Grenache

This blend is inspired by the band of fresh delicious early drinking reds being produced in the cool regions of Australia.

The Syrah comes from the Sexton and Tarraford Vineyards, the Carignan and the Grenache are grown at the Tarraford Vineyard.

Each variety and parcel is fermented separately in small open vats with varying degrees of whole bunch and whole berry fermentation, before being matured in large and small oak for 18 months.

95 Points - "An 85/11/4% varietal split and made into an early-drinking style that's taking the Valley by storm. Giant Steps make an LDR - light dry red - but this has an altogether different take with its flavour profile. Super-bright and juicy fruit, a mix of dark plums and red berries, sarsaparilla with a light dusting of spice. The palate is actually quite refined, with svelte tannins and refreshing acidity. Given the style brief, this is pitch perfect. It's hard to put it down. So I didn't." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 Points - 96 points and Trophy for Best Red Blend - 2021 Royal Melbourne Wine Show

92 Points - "Yarra Valley via the Rhone Valley. Sexton and Tarraford have the plantings of the forbidden varieties.Lush, slurpy red, all dark berries, cola, pepper and sage herbal character. Good perfume, good flavours, good texture which is sandy and swishes with sexy, silty tannins. Long too. The wine feels medium weight, come hither and easy appeal, but dials in some complexity alongside its drinkability. It's charming from the get go. Very polished and prim in a way too. A very nice expression, all up, and ready to roll." - Mike Bennie.

    An Interesting Blend

Not your usual wine from the Yarra Valley but it is a great wine to drink. Fully ripe dark berries and a subtle earthy minerality make for a complex and interesting wine.

    Absolutely delicious drop!

Being a fan of Giant Steps I can't believe I hadn't tried this blend till now. Perhaps overshadowed by the superstars in the Pinot Noir stable this wine is really good and sits comfortably among its stable mates on the quality scale vs value scale. I truely love how Giant Steps wines always punch above their price tag.

    Beautiful

I love this wine. Something a little different. It’s so well made, juicy and bright. The most stunning vivid purple. On the palate bursting with fruit but with fine structure and tannins holding it together. Quite exceptional.

    Brilliant blend

This is a very well balanced wine. Light yet complex. It flew under the radar for several years in the Giant Steps line-up but has more recently received very favourable reviews and price increases reflects this change. When on special for closer to $30 it is a bargain!

Giant Steps

Giant Steps is a premium Yarra Valley outfit founded by Phil Sexton and located in the township of Healesville. Beginning with the vision of original head winemaker Steve Flamsteed, Giant Steps developed an international reputation for producing some of Australia's finest examples of single vineyard Pinot Noir & Chardonnay.

In 2021 the exceptionally talented Melanie Chester joined the team as the new head of winemaking and viticulture, marking an exciting new chapter in this elite producer's story.

Every aspect of the Giant Steps process is geared towards making truly world-class wines from the vineyard to the final bottled wine. The focus is on what the Yarra does best - Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz/Syrah and Bordeaux-variety blends - and showcasing the unique terroirs of some of the region's finest vineyards.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
