Description

This is the flagship wine that sits at the top of the tree from Eleana Anderson at Mayford Wines in Porepunkah.

This unusual blend captures the essence of this special pint-sized vineyard. The Cabernet component for this wine comes from vines planted at Mayford back in 2011.

The other portion of the blend is made up of the famous Mayford Tempranillo, one of the country's leading examples of the variety.

This is not a big wine but it has plenty of horsepower under the hood. Inwardly concentrated, beautifully balanced, it's a heroic release from the charming boutique wine producer.

Opening with intrigue, in a style reminiscent of some of the great Italian wines that are highly structural yet beautifully perfumed – think Nebbiolo or perhaps Aglianico. The dark, tarry undertones are interlaced with fragrant, earthy aromatics; cigar box, chicory, red currant, musk and marzipan. Slowly as the lid opens, the great complexity of this wine becomes apparent. The palate is medium weight, but smooth and integrated with dark luscious fruits, spices and savoury tobacco leaf characters. It has length and liveliness with sinewy tannins that wire together the skeleton of this unique and delicious wine.
Small parcels of low-cropping Tempranillo were hand-picked from the ridge of the original Tempranillo block in early March, and the Cabernet Sauvignon some three weeks later. Each batch was chilled and cold soaked before undergoing natural yeast fermentation in small open fermenters, then basket pressed, just prior to dryness, to finish fermentation and MLF in oak. Nominally allocated at pressing for the Ovens Crossing blend, these components were put to French oak barriques- 50% new – for 11 months and then blended and returned to older oak for a further 11 months. A further 28 months of bottle maturation allowed the oak, dense tannin and dark fruit to work their way into balance for winter 2022 release.

95 Points - "Do yourself a favour and make this a keeper. While everything is in its place and nicely so, it's still got a way to go, which is the winemaker's intention. It is made with longevity in mind, hence the firm tannin structure and the noted involvement of vanillan oak wrapped around some classy, generous black fruits, spice and wild herbs. The middle palate sings a mighty tantalising song." - Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 Points - "Dark, inky and opaque in the glass. Lifted aromas of blackberry, cola, bramble, cedar, spice, ironstone and anise. Full, rich, firm and structured on the palate. Plenty of dark, inky berry fruits, briar, licorice, sarsaparilla, charcuterie and soy. Savoury, textured tannins and snappy acidity temper the powerful fruit nicely." - Aaron Brasher (The Real Review)

94 Points - "This is in a beautiful drinking spot. One thing I really like about the Mayford reds is that they’re routinely unafraid of tannin but, equally as routine, are so harmonious and integrated. Nothing sticks out. This has some savoury, developed nuances among the mainstay of cherry-plum fruit, with mint, fragrant herb and woodsy spice notes playing key roles too. Oak is present, positive and not dangerous. This is a seriously good red wine." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
