Description

Pandora's Amphora is a skin contact white wine with the kitchen sink thrown at it by the winemaking team, Jo Marsh and Glenn James.

The fruit comes from a series of vineyards across the Alpine Valleys. It's a blend of Ferraro Vineyard Vermentino, bringing the acid and drive of the blend, and Greenacres Vineyard Fiano, bringing the body-ody-ody and palate weight.

The fruit sits quietly on skins for around 200 days inside Glenn's old amphora before being pressed, then left on lees for another six months. The finished wine is a force to be reckoned with.

If you enjoy the twists and turns of a complex amber wine, then walk this way and see what's inside this Pandora's Box.

Two white grape varieties - Vermentino and Fiano were hand harvested on the same day and then fermented as one, along with their skins and seeds in a single terracotta ‘Amphora’. In Greek mythology Pandora was the first human female created by Hephaestus by order of Zeus . Her name means “all gifted” as all the Gods of Olympia bestowed all manner of gifts upon her (good and not so good). She was created from the clay of the earth just as are our Amphora is.

Fermentation occurs using only the ‘indigenous’ yeast from the vineyard’s own terroir. Once fermentation is complete Pandora is then sealed up and her precious contents matured on the skins and seeds for around 200 days. All the flavours and many other grape derived compounds produced by the vines each season in the presence of fermentation lees (yeast and malolactic bacteria) are slowly extracted and transformed during this period to produce an aromatic, complex and textured white wine. Pandora is then gently basket pressed and it is only at this point that the wine has a small addition of sulphur dioxide to preserve all that has been captured. The wine is then matured on light yeast lees for six months.

95 Points - "Equal split of vermentino and fiano from the Alpine Valleys. Wild yeast fermentation, sealed in a single clay amphora on skins for 300 days. Basket-pressed with SO2 to preserve flavour and freshness, and settled for another 6 months on light lees then racked and bottled without filtering or fining. The result is a tremendous wine. Pale rose-gold-straw hue; wafts of wild flowers, lemon honey, lemon barley and savoury spices. While it has texture and beautiful phenolics, natural acidity keep this reined-in." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

Billy Button focuses primarily on producing small batches of alternative varieties from good local growers in their small patch of Victoria. The team explores varieties that are rarely seen in the Australian landscape - you can find anything from Schioppettino to Verduzzo in this eclectic range.

Jo's gentle touch in the winery makes for beautifully balanced wines that show great texture and vibrancy. The Billy Button range is a little gem of North East Victoria. It's one of the more unique wine ranges in the country and the perfect place to begin your exploration of alternative varieties.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
