2016 Tyrrell's Vat 1 Semillon
"Vat 1 delivers again."
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
Tyrrell's just do things right. And they might do Semillon more right than anything else.
The Vat 1 is already wonderfully complex with youthful flavours of citrus zest, lemon curd, and semi-mature characters of toast, almond and honey. The seamless and long palate flows with pristine waxiness and intense, primary fruit. What a wine.
Only very small amount released, so make sure you grab some Australian wine history.Read more about 2016 Tyrrell's Vat 1 Semillon
2020 Dry River Chardonnay
"A powerful wine with impressive purity.
- Bob Campbell (The Real Review)
Dry River Chardonnays can be big, structured wines that almost always need extended time in bottle before approaching. This release is starting to emerge like a powerful butterfly.
Vibrant white flower blossoms, lemon and grapefruit flavours are fully on show, along with some creamy, lightly spicy oak.
Some nutty, chalky notes on the nose, plus some initial struck-match aromas. This is an ageworthy Chardonnay of definition and class, and rarity.Read more about 2020 Dry River Chardonnay
2019 Arnot Roberts Watson Ranch Chardonnay
"This fractured, well-drained calcareous soil, coupled with organicfarming and cool windy conditions, imbue this parcel with great potential to produce world-class Chardonnay."
- Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts (Arnot Roberts)
Watson Ranch Vineyard is perched on a steep hillside at the southernmost end of the Napa Valley. Exposed and unprotected from the elements, this wind-whipped site was planted in 1993.
Soils at Watson Ranch are composed of calcareous clay over limestone. This soil type is extremely rare on the North Coast but shows itself in a narrow fin at the tail end of the Vaca Mountains in Southern Napa County.
Organically farmed, this Chardonnay is quite the antithesis of the style that has made Napa famous. With its high natural acidy, and mineral core, this is much more akin to the wines of Chablis, than the fuller, and broader style that Napa is known for.Read more about 2019 Arnot Roberts Watson Ranch Chardonnay
2019 Clemens Busch Marienburg Grosses Gewachs Rothenpfad Riesling
"A very exciting wine already, the long finish as clear as a mountain stream. Great potential."
- Stuart Pigott (JamesSuckling.com)
The Rothenpfad plot within the greater Marienburg vineyard is slightly higher up the slope, above the railway viaduct. It's full of red slate, giving the wines incredibly acidity and a distinct spicy character.
It's got a mountain stream, alpine feel, with the fruit spectrum staying on the lemon, lime and grapefruit side, rather than on the tropical. It's an astonishingly crisp, clear, crystalline wine with decades ahead of it in the cellar.
One of the best Rieslings you could ever put your hands on.Read more about 2019 Clemens Busch Marienburg Grosses Gewachs Rothenpfad Riesling
2020 Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Mont Sec
Of their three sites, Huet's steep rocky Le Mont vineyard produces their most linear, racy wines, but with plenty of layered, golden richness. This is the where to go for great Sec and Demi-Sec Vouvray, with crystalline purity and punch.
This is just at the start of its life, but early drinkers will revel in its fleshy youth, with citrus, chalk and floral elements.
Lip-smackingly crunchy yet satisfyingly textural. Just 5-6 grams of residual sugar, so very much a dry Sec style.Read more about 2020 Domaine Huet Vouvray Le Mont Sec
2020 Luis Seabra Xisto Cru Branco Douro
"It's epic. It's complex as. It's a full sense experience yet so balanced and fine. Unreal."
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
This is the top white wine in the Seabra stable.
It's a phenomenal wine. Seabra believes that the main variety in this blend, Rabigato, is the perfect vessel to convey the distinctive characteristics of the schisty slopes (hence Xisto).
The vines are 70 - 80 years old. The farming is all chemical-free. The wine is made with purity at the front of mind.
It's difficult to convey the power and persistence of the Xisto Cru. It feels like you are drinking a freight-train of minerals, stones and waxy/honeyed stonefruits. There is only a very small amount available in Australia, and it won't last long.
Rightfully so, it's absolutely brilliant.Read more about 2020 Luis Seabra Xisto Cru Branco Douro
