About The Pack
The wine scene in Tasmania is thumping at the moment with some of the brightest young talent in the country crafting wines across the island.
And while Pinot Noir and Chardonnay get the lion's share of attention, there are plenty of other delicious things to explore from our most southern state.
Here's six wines that offer great value and give you a taste of what Tassie has to offer.
2020 Stargazer Tupelo
Sam Connew is an excellent winemaker and her rising Tasmanian label, Stargazer, is definitely one to watch.
'Tupelo' is her Alsatian-inspired blend of Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Riesling. This is a very well-constructed version of this classic aromatic blend, with good acidity and a touch of grip to offset the natural fruit sweetness of these expressive varieties.
It's delicious, interesting and good value, the perfect wine to tuck into alongside a plate of fresh shellfish or sashimi.
Sam's wines are only made in small quantities so get in quick!

Most of the 'work' that happens in the Stefano Lubiana wines happens in the vineyard. Steve's was the first vineyard in Tasmania to be certified biodynamic. The quality of the wines exhibit this commitment to the quality of fruit.
This Primavera Chardonnay is great buying if you like the feel of Tassie Chardonnay but don't want to blow the whole budget.
It's Chardonnay with depth and richness but with a fine line of acidity strung throughout. This is pitched as an entry point into Steve's premium range of wines but offers much more than that title would suggest.
This is a great place to start if you want to become familiar with these excellent Tasmanian wines.

The Havilah range is Ricky Evans of Two Tonne Tasmania's experimental label where he can shake things up and try and test the waters with some different winemaking techniques.
Here he takes skin contact to Pinot Gris, looking for more flesh and structure out of the variety without compromising on the beautiful aromatics. He's nailed it. This is a great drink.
It's not quite and amber wine and not really a rosé, per se, but it is 100% flat out delicious and guaranteed to disappear from your glass in the blink of an eye.

This is the third vintage Vaughn has been able to release a singular wine made from the Gamay he and his wife Linda planted on their gorgeous Tasmanian vineyard.
For its first run, with not much juice to play with, Vaughn has put together a beautiful, bright and fragrant, early drinking red which is absolutely delightful.
Gamay is becoming more and more popular these days, Vaughn was ahead of the curve to plant it on his 'close-planted' block and his foresight is now paying off.

A meeting of the minds between Bryan Martin and Ricky Evans of Two Tonne Tasmania gave birth to this sensational value Pinot Noir.
Ricky effectively grew and made this wine himself with a nod and a blessing from his friend Bryan who was locked down in NSW during April of 2020.
It's a wickedly drinkable, lively Pinot Noir - all about vibrant up-front fruit as opposed to the slightly more reductive/savoury style of Pinot Noir that Ricky typically produces.
It's one of the star releases from the motley crew of Long Way Around wines born from 2020. It's so dangerously delicious and ready to drink right now.

A ludicrously small parcel of fruit was available to make this cuvee but Jonny Hughes loves his Tassie Syrah, so why not, hey?
This is a sublime, elegant and spice-riddled Syrah more akin to something from the cooler parts of the northern hemisphere than 'classic' Australian Shiraz.
It's finely structured, beautifully presented and extremely limited.
Only a limited amount produced.
