2019 Combes Willow Lake Pinot Noir
"It’s a bloody ripper."
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
Willow Lake vineyard has become a happy hunting ground for younger generation producers in the Yarra Valley looking for quality fruit from the Upper Yarra.
In 2019, Oscar Hermann got his hands on a small parcel of Willow Lake Pinot and he's made it absolutely sing.
This is a silky, seductive red which is light in frame but huge in impact. It's a soft, feathery pillow of sweet cherry and strawberry fruit with a fine rasp of whole-bunch derived tannin that draws long through the finish.
It's fantastic driking and brilliant value given the demand for high quality Yarra Pinot such as this.
Dive in.

The warm climate in Swan Valley sees different varieties excel compared to those that have been notably successful down South in Margaret River.
Here, Tempranillo, Touriga and Grenache, from Geograph, Perth Hills and Swan Valley combine forces. Those varieties that do well in warmer climates such like Spain, are thriving in these warmer parts of WA.
Garth and Kristen believe that if a variety looks great on it's own, let it shine. If it looks better with a little help from some friends, then blend it up.
They've nailed the balance here. The 2018 vintage of this cuvee made Mike Bennie dub Garth Cliff, "a quiet revolutionary in the Swan Valley."

Few wine ventures are as committed to the idea of sustainability as Brendan and Laura from Unico Zelo. Their championing of Italian varieties, particularly Nero d'Avola and Fiano, comes from their belief in their suitability to Australia.
Nero is a particularly hardy grape and it thrives in warm, dry climates. So, here they take the fruit from one of the warmest and driest regions in the country and make a glugable, slurpable red which is ideal quaffing for just about any night of the week.
This is their brightest and freshest feeling Nero to date. A dash of old vine Zibbibo (white wine) adding lift and a super zippy crunch of acidity. It's great drinking at a great price and a little left of centre. More inventive stuff from this energetic couple.

The rest of the Billy Button range is about exploring singular varieties from the Alpine Valleys.
Here winemaker Jo Marsh combines Dolcetto, Durif, Refosco and Tempranillo to make something slurpy and juicy which you can drink any night of the week.
The Dolcetto gives you some lovely fine tannin, the Refosco lends bright aromatics and sweet red berried fruit, Tempranillo and Durif lend depth and body.
It's the perfect mid-week quaffer to slosh into tumbers and watch a movie with a cheese plate.

The Somos wines are the product of two enthusiastic young winemakers looking to make wines from new and interesting varieties grown in classic regions. Benjamin Caldwell and Mauricio Ruiz Cantu are the duo behind them, smart guys with some tasty things in production.
This is their delicious Aglianico sourced from a small vineyard in McLaren Vale. It was fermented as 50% whole bunches, striving for a perfumed and medium-bodied version of this late-ripening Italian variety.
Totally more-ish and one of our favourite Aussie Aglianicos.

In only a few short vintages this dynamic couple have carved out a niche for their eponymous label as one of the most exciting and in demand wineries in McLaren Vale.
Drinkability is writ large across the range. The 'Junto' (Spanish for 'together') is a wine made for easily enjoying with friends and family. The 2019 version is just as good as ever.
The Grenache component a much less than in previous years (88%), the power of the 2019 vintage bringing a richer, more silky wine to bottle on release. This is as delicious as medium-bodied reds get from this part of the world.
Incredibly versatile and impossibly more-ish, Andre and Selina have done it again.
