2019 Vino Volta Funky & Fearless Chenin Blanc
This is the textural, more classic example of Chenin Blanc from the Vino Volta duo.
Garth Cliff and Kristen McGann are really passionate about Chenin Blanc. Showcasing the varieations created from different vineyards and with different winemaking techniques in and around the Swan Valley region. These are 25+ year old vines in the north of the region, from the Rockets vineyard, planted on sandy loam.
It's made in a fairly textural style, focusing in on the waxy, mouth-filling characters that make Chenin so distinctive as a variety.
It's shapely, pithy and very easy to knock back.Read more about 2019 Vino Volta Funky & Fearless Chenin Blanc
2020 Kerri Greens Pinots de Mornington Rose
The Quealy family have been one of the country's leading producers of Pinot Gris for some years.
Here, Tom McCarthy, son of Cathleen Quealy, takes the charms of Pinot Gris from the Peninsula and combines it with its genetic cousins Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The end result is a striking pink wine born of red and white grapes that drinks like a charm.
It's a red berry paradise in a glass. Delicious warm-weather drinking here with a bit of funk and interest.Read more about 2020 Kerri Greens Pinots de Mornington Rose
2019 Arfion Willowlake Vineyard Pinot Noir
This is another excellent Pinot Noir release from one of the region's brightest boutique producers in Arfion.
The Willowlake vineyard that supplied the fruit for this Pinot is one of the most highly regarded in the Yarra. The cooler conditions, steep south-facing slopes and ancient volcanic red soils result in fruit with detail, elegance, perfume and fine structure.
Forty percent of the fruit was fermented as entirely whole bunches, the remainder completely destemmed.
This is a beautifully easy, gentle Pinot that unravels itself in the glass. Charming, intriguing wine with not a hair out of place.Read more about 2019 Arfion Willowlake Vineyard Pinot Noir
2019 Dominique Piron Beaujolais Brouilly
Fourteen generations of Pirons have grown and made wine in Beaujolais, with the latest, Dominique Piron, having a 40 year legacy of producing top-flight wines from the most iconic Crus.
Le Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France dubbed him, "one of the architects of the revival of Morgon, tackling with boundless energy the expression of wines of terroir, vinified in the pure tradition of Beaujolais....”. His expression of Brouilly shows all the charm and easy-drinking appeal that the Cru is famous for.
Brouilly is the fleshier, more supple of the Dominique Piron Crus.
It's a slightly richer, softer and more supple wine than the powerful Morgon or the mineral-charged Fleurie. It's perhaps the most approachable immediately and this is a very successful vintage of this cuveé.Read more about 2019 Dominique Piron Beaujolais Brouilly
2020 La Petite Vanguard Corsair Red Blend
"It’s an altogether good wine offering a bit of extra interest."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
This is a divergent wine away from the typical Vanguardist MO of interesting takes on McLaren Vale and Clare Valley classics.
The Corsair is a blend of three Portuguese red varieties, typically found in the famous fortified wines of the Douro. Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional, and Tinta Roriz having a party here. And they are having a great time.
The wine is medium-bodied, blue fruited and flecked with all matter of exotic spices. It's a lovely little red to take you on a trip away from the usual world of Australian reds. It's a fun and perky and lovely to drink.Read more about 2020 La Petite Vanguard Corsair Red Blend
