2016 S.C. Pannell The Vale Grenache Shiraz
Entire volumes have been written on Steve Pannell's influence on the Australian Wine industry. His remarkable trophy room is a testament to his place in the industry.
Much of his success of the last couple of decades stems from his deep love of his home region, McLaren Vale. 'The Vale' is Steve's ode to his home. As the man says, "it is the Vale in essence, taste and character."
With old vine fruit, carefully measured amounts of oak, and co-fermentation of the two varieties this is concentrated, energetic and perfectly balanced all at once.Read more about 2016 S.C. Pannell The Vale Grenache Shiraz
2017 S.C. Pannell Old McDonald Grenache
This year he releases two single vineyard Grenache's from McLaren Vale. This, the Old McDonald vineyard is 75 years old in the Grenache epicentre of the region, Blewitt Springs.
This was fermented in small batches with 20% whole bunches, pressed gently after 11 days on skins and then sent to a eight-year-old 4500L oak vat to mature.
It's the detail and drive in this wine that is so startling.
As Gary Walsh said in his 96 point review, "Flat out beautiful. Succulence with a serious nature. Bravo."Read more about 2017 S.C. Pannell Old McDonald Grenache
2016 S.C. Pannell Cabernet Malbec
Steve Pannell's favourite Australian wines comes from the hallowed soils at Wendouree in the Clare Valley.
The unique qualities of this almost mythical vineyard impart certain characteristics to each of the wines which could only come from Wendouree. These wines have been a benchmark in Steve's mind for many years.
This new release is Steve's ode to Wendouree, sung with a McLaren Vale accent. The Cabernet vines are 70 years old, the Malbec, 25 years old. This is about balance, density and drive. A wine that will stand the test of time.
The 2016 is an excellent first release of this blend.Read more about 2016 S.C. Pannell Cabernet Malbec
2017 S.C. Pannell Smart Grenache
Steve Pannell has been a leading figure in the rejuvenation and reinvention of Grenache in McLaren Vale over the last 20 years. Here we see the next step in his constant pursuit of perfection for the variety.
This year he releases two single vineyard Grenache's from McLaren Vale. This comes from the highest vineyard in McLaren Vale, high up on a hill in the Clarendon sub-region.
The vines are 62 years old that produced this beauty. No whole bunches in this wine, the brightness and ethereal quality of the fruit akes this into transcendent territory.
Gary Walsh was impressed enough to finish his 96 point review with simply this: "Wow."Read more about 2017 S.C. Pannell Smart Grenache
2016 S.C. Pannell Syrah
Since winning the Jimmy Watson Trophy with the 2013 vintage, this Adelaide Hills Syrah has become one of the most sought after wines in the S.C. Pannell range.
For those that claimed and loved some of the highly prized '13, Steve says this release from 2016 is the closest thing to it.
It comes from a stunning vineyard in Echunga, in the south of the Adelaide Hills. Like all of Steve's wines it is built around bright fruit and beautiful tannins, and in a warmer season like 2016, it really sings.
This is the embodiment of modern cool-climate Syrah. A classy and sophisticated wine driven by perfume and spice. It's stunning.
