2018 Express Winemakers Cheninade 500ml
Express Winemakers is Ryan O'Meara's pint-sized wine operation from the deep south of WA.
From kicking off in 2011, Ryan has assembled a group of top-flight vineyards from around the Great Southern that supply him with top-flight fruit to make his fun and creative range of wines.
He claim that this is "a lively barrel fermented Chenin Blanc to share." Well, if they wanted me to share it, he shouldn't have put it in a 500ml bottle...
This fun little Pet-Nat has "DRINK ME" writ large on its forehead. This is no sniff and swirl wine style, this is made for drinking on hot days with reckless abandon.
Unpretentious and utterly delicious - hand me that straw, please.Read more about 2018 Express Winemakers Cheninade 500ml
2017 Switch Wines Snapdragon Skin Contact Viognier
The Snapdragon is Vanessa Altmann's big and juicy take on Viognier from McLaren Vale.
This is a ripe and juicy wine which screams its variety. A dash of Trebbiano thrown in for a little savoury edge and some skin contact give some textural layers, but at its core, this is a luscious white wine with plenty of personality.
A colourful wine, organically grown, from an enthusiastic young winemaker in top form.Read more about 2017 Switch Wines Snapdragon Skin Contact Viognier
2018 Poppelvej Dead Ohio Sky Mourvedre Rosé
Poppelvej (pronounced 'Pop-ell-vee') is a pint-sized winery based in McLaren Vale started by young Danish sommelier-turned-winemaker, Uffe Deichmann with the help of his brother Jens.
Uffe now has a small, ramshackle winery dug into in the side of a hill in McLaren Vale. He produces tiny amounts of wine with a minimal intervention philosophy.
A new Rosé and another string to Uffe's bow here. This is Mourvedre (Mataro) which is aged in cool, black Nomblot eggs on lees for three months. This aging builds lovely fluffy texture through the wine making for great mouthfeel.
It's fermented wild until it is totally dry, the natural earthy spice characters of Mourvedre making for a savoury, crunchy style of Rosé which is perfect for all occasions.Read more about 2018 Poppelvej Dead Ohio Sky Mourvedre Rosé
2017 Somos Tintito
The Somos wines are the product of two enthusiastic young winemakers - one Australian and one Mexican - looking to make interesting and contemporary wines from McLaren Vale. Benjamin Caldwell and Mauricio Ruiz Cantu are the creative duo behind this exciting project, with the wines exported back to South & Central America as well as sold through just a handful of outlets and venues locally in Australia.
This is a mystery red blend from Ben and Mauricio. It's a compilation of predominantly red Rhone varieties with a few other bits and pieces thrown in for fun. The aim here was to create "A wine driven by primary berry fruit, savoury spice and acid line. Textural light red." and they've nailed the MO.
This is a top value little red and is squarely in no-brainer territory for those chasing a medium-bodied red that is loaded with charisma.Read more about 2017 Somos Tintito
2018 Delinquente Roxanne the Razar NDM Red
With this delightful Italian-inspired Montepulciano / Nero d'Avola blend, winemaker Greg Grigoriou goes in search of a "don't think, just drink" style of red.
Greg says "I just wanted a juicy, easy-drinking red wine with something a little extra going on just under the surface." and he's done a very smart job of it. This is great value.
The juiciness of the Nero d'Avola being tamed by the sleekness and savouriness of the Montepulciano. The Riverlands and Ashley Radcliff continue to be the haven for young winemakers looking for affordable, well-grown fruit with some interest.
All that is on show here in Roxanne the Razor.Read more about 2018 Delinquente Roxanne the Razar NDM Red
2018 Gentle Folk Tiersmen Syrah
Deep in the rolling vineyards of the Basket Range in the Adelaide Hills lives Gareth and Rainbo Belton.
They are two of the country's leading experts in seaweed who caught the wine bug a few years ago and now run a winery making small batches of fun and creative wines with their friends in the Basket range.
Gareth farms their three vineyards himself. He works organically in the vineyard and with little to no additions in the winery. The Gentle Folk wines have an energy and style all their own.
Gareth and Brendan Keys (BK Wines) split a parcel of Shiraz fruit from Erinn's Adelaide Hills vineyard. It's some of Gareth's favourite fruit to play with and this is the resulting wine.
The Tiersman Syrah is a light-medium bodied, spicy, crunchy and ready for a quick chill in the fridge. Syrah built for smashing, not for cellaring.
All whole bunches, all attitude. It's righteous little thing to drink.Read more about 2018 Gentle Folk Tiersmen Syrah
