2018 Ochota Barrels Weird Berries in Woods Gewürztraminer
Taras Ochota has a particular affinity with Gewürztraminer. In his wine studio, he plays with it as an accent. A splash here, some skins there. Making some of his best red wines come to life.
The Weird Berries in the Woods is a unique offering. When asked what he does to the fruit in the winery, Taras says, “Whatever they teach you to do when making aromatic whites, I just go and do the opposite”.
The opposite works.
He wants the fruit to ripen at different times, making some of the berries ripe and juicy, some lean and crunchy. All adding a little something different to the overall 'feel'. Basket pressed, some old wood used as a fermenting vessel and as usual, the wildest of ferments.
This is wonderful Gewürz, full of character, personality and a little mystery.Read more about 2018 Ochota Barrels Weird Berries in Woods Gewürztraminer
2018 Ochota Barrels Surfer Rosa Rosé
You know summer is on it's way when Taras Ochota rocks in with his Surfer Rosa, a Rosé wine picked from the same block as the Green Room Grenache Syrah.
Here, Taras picks the fruit a little earlier, while the berries are bristling with acid, blushed with colour from the Australian sun.
This is ready and raring to tackle any Sunday afternoon.
This wine makes you feel like grabbing a board and heading for the ocean, but it's not all fun and games, there's a serious side to this wine...
Nah, just kidding. This is made to be hooked into!!Read more about 2018 Ochota Barrels Surfer Rosa Rosé
2018 Ochota Barrels Texture Like Sun Sector 5
In classic Taras style, there is nothing 'classic' about this blend. It's a playful bits 'n' pieces blend of Pinot Noir, Grenache, Gamay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Meunier, Fragola, Riesling, and Chardonnay which is wicked to drink.
The blend sounds weird but as the name suggests (a line from a song at Taras and Amber's wedding), this is all about texture. This is less about the varieties and more about the final product, a kind of 'greater than the sum of its parts' scenario.
It's a wine made without a second thought of convention. Throw out the rule book and make something awesome and just like its namesake song, it's a wine that will just get stuck in your head.
Spring is almost here, here's a little sunshine in a bottle to kick things off.Read more about 2018 Ochota Barrels Texture Like Sun Sector 5
2018 Ochota Barrels The Green Room Grenache Syrah
The Green Room Grenache Syrah is a new look at a classic Rhone style blend.
The Grenache from a McLaren Vale vineyard planted in 1946 is the focal point of this piece. Making up the majority of the blend (92%), most of the Grenache is whole bunch pressed with the fruit spending up to 88 days on skins.
Got a whole lotta skins. The detail here is mesmerising.
Phenolics, clean natural acid and palate tension are the rhythm section of the wine, with floral highlights and bright fruit making up the melody and harmonics.
This is a young, vibrant, dazzling version of McLaren Vale Grenache which just gets better every year.Read more about 2018 Ochota Barrels The Green Room Grenache Syrah
