About The Wine

Bertrand Gautherot planted this tiny pint-sized vineyard in Biaunes in the year 2000.

He planted it with cuttings from Champagne luminaries Anselme Selosse and from Dauvissat’s legendary Valmur grand cru vineyard. The vines were planted wild amongst the natural native vegetation. Yields are kept painfully small, making for a powerful, concentrated Blanc de Blancs, even at this young vine age.

This wine makes no commercial sense, the intense labour and meticulous attention to detail for such a small production cuveé could only be for a labour of love.

It's a beautiful wine: raw, dry and showing exceptional fruit. It's a stunning depction of Chardonnay from what is traditionally Pinot Noir territory.

About Champagne Vouette et Sorbee

Uncompromising, unadorned, unmistakably hand-crafted, the wines of Bertrand Gautherot are the product of painstaking attention to detail in every aspect of production - from ground to grape to glass.

A student of the legendary Anselme Selosse, Gautherot farms just 5.5 hectares in Buxières-sur-Arce, Côte des Bar. A biodynamic-certified producer since 1998, his wines are made in tiny quantities and are highly sought-after by devotees of Champagne's true artisans.

Each cuveé is raised in barrel and no dosage is applied to any of the wines making for truly original, authentic, savoury and complex wines that speak of place. As Antonio Galloni once wrote, "they are among the most exciting wines being made in Champagne."

Vouette et Sorbée Blanc d'Argile Extra Brut

Within the cold, west-facing Biaunes lieu-dit there is a small parcel of Chardonnay (the Côtes des Bar is overwhelmingly planted to Pinot Noir) that Gautherot planted wild, without preparing the soils, amongst the native vegetation. Established in 2000 with massale cuttings from Anselme Selosse and from Dauvissat’s Valmur grand cru vineyard, this portion of the vineyard is now the origin of what Antonio Galloni calls "one of the most beautiful and distinctive wines in Champagne.” To craft such a deeply resonant wine from young vines, Gautherot has had to be brutally frugal with his yields; his vines are severely pruned to one single branch or ‘baguette’ and the site yields just 15-20 hl/ha each year. This figure is astonishingly low by any standard, let alone Champagne, and even Gautherot has admitted it’s a little crazy. Naturally the postage-stamp size of the plot and its microscopic yield account for the precious rarity of this wine. Fermentation is wild and takes place a mix of Burgundian pièce and 400-litre fût, again purchased from vigneron friends in Burgundy. As with the Fidèle, this wines spends 15 months in bottle, sur latte, before being disgorged by hand.
