2018 Mount Pleasant Rosehill Vineyard Shiraz
"So silky, so effortless, such a beautiful expression of vineyard and vintage."
Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
Class and elegance from Mount Pleasant (who shed the McWilliam's name in 2020). This is an floral and earthy Hunter Shiraz of grace and gentle power.
Some coffee oak notes, and high-toned spices are apparent, among the earthy, plummy fruit. There's a lick of grainy tannin to the finish. A lovely, savoury Shiraz from the historic Rosehill vineyard.
An easy bet to cellar for ten plus years.

"All things considered this is a bit of a steal. The history, the class in the bottle, the potential longevity, the importance."
Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)
OP is Old Paddock and OH is Old Hill, vineyards planted in 1921 and 1880 respectively. So we can genuinely call them old.
This a bolder, richer wine than some other Mount Pleasant reds, with such great intensity, power and earthiness. But it is not ripe, syrupy power, it is more a savoury depth caressed by tight, grippy tannins that you could see melting into each other as the years go by. Too much poetry but this is an inspirational wine!
Please grab a bottle or two for the cellar. You'll thank us down the track.

"It couldn't be any more Hunter if it tried...You'd bet on this having a long, beautiful future."
Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)
Mountain A may sound more like a new soft drink brand, but it is part of the new approach to marking out unique blocks in the Mount Pleasant vineyards, and blending them into light, medium and full-bodied releases.
Smells, tastes and feels like a high quality Hunter Shiraz.
2019 Mount Pleasant Mountain D Full Bodied Dry Red
"More savoury than fruit driven in some respects, but this is all about insane quality fruit and a magnificent site."
Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
Mountain D may sound more like tea bag brand, but it is part of the new approach to marking out unique blocks in the Mount Pleasant vineyards, and blending them into light, medium and full-bodied releases.
This sits at the buxom end of the spectrum, with intense dark fruits, a palate of black dust and earth, and a finish of incredible savoury power. Pepper and spice notes are abundant.
There is rare Hunter tannic grip, graphitey and linear, all in support of the massive fruit concentration. A long future life is assured.

The Rosehill vineyard was planted by Maurice O'Shea in 1946 with cuttings from the 1880 Old Hill vineyard, so this is Hunter heritage writ large.
This single site has a great track record of aromatic, long-lived Shiraz that are suggestive rather bombastic, with bright red fruits and great purity.
About 20% whole bunch went into the wine, which was matured in French oak, some new, for just over a year. Possibly a recipe for big, sinewy Shiraz, however, this is delicately concentrated, light-footed and only gently tannic, and will only get silkier with age.

"An amazing wine - profound, seemingly with immense potential. Great stuff."
Huon Hooke (The Real Review)
OH is the OG Mount Pleasant vineyard, planted in 1880 by an Englishman of great foresight, Charles King. The Old Hill site continues to produce exceptional quality Shiraz in very low quantities.
An awesome release of extreme complexity, the aromas flitting around like a butterfly from brown spices to earthy tones, to dark plum and chocolate covered cherries.
The palate is polished and pure rather than rustic. It's not Barossa glossy, more Hunter high-toned, with great balance and a straight down the fairway finish.
What a wine.
