About The Pack
The 2018 releases from Roger Pike at Marius are marvellous.
He has released three wines from the 2018 season - his two iconic Shiraz: Symphony & Simpatico and the Shiraz Mataro blend, Symposium. These three wines showcase one of McLaren Vale's most singular producers.
The Shiraz both show superb depth and structure. While the fruit sits lively and accessible in the glass right now, the rocky, chiselled tannin that is unique to Shiraz from this site stands as a constant reminder that time will be very kind to these rare beauties. The Shiraz Mataro is rich and hearty with power and finesse in equal portion. Suffice to say, he likes what he sees in the 2018s - as did Mike Bennie and Gary Walsh at The Wine Front who have both given rave reviews for these wines on release.
This pack is strictly limited and will not last long.

"Symphony does what the label says; a symphonic wine, seamless and filigreed, long, moving and pure. It’s shaped tight and pent up, a sheath of sinewy, fine tannins all lacy but firm ribbons ending up in infinity, or the next sip. So perfumed too, floral and pretty, not sweet, just fresh, all exotic spice and red and black berries. So much detail to pause over, many notes in the piece, or something like that. It’s delicious, but extraordinary shiraz too." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

"I often think, when I taste Marius Shiraz, that these wines come from ‘some other place’. A world where depth and ‘minerality’ and distinctive character maketh the wine. In some ways, much like Wendouree, or so it seems to me. This is a wine of depth, and length, and scale, where saline flavours mingle with dark berries, plus a kiss of seductive nougat oak, the earth and succulence of fruit marry and the finish runs until death us do part. A wine of distinct and uncompromising personality. Shit, I’ll miss these wines when they are no longer. Still, here we are. So rejoice! And maybe repent at leisure." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

"Big bouquet of char and tar, old spice cupboard, wet bark, sour-sweet plums, undergrowth and dried meat. Wonderful, evocative scents that take you to Roger Pike’s front porch and gulping in the air of the gnarly vineyard tucked away in strands of natives trees. Chewy, rich, dark berried, slightly jellied fruit set in a burr of crushed rock tannin. Grip and grunt, a curmudgeonly wine of depth, richness and complexity, but all the savouriness. Man, this is good gear." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

"While the Symphony of the same vintage is a ‘better wine’, as such, this is the one that speaks to me most directly. It’s all blackberry and beef, a ferrous feel, with deep silty tannin, scrub herb and hazelnut, clean acidity through its core, a blueberry succulence, a rare ‘mineral’ feel to it, very little in the way of winemaking edifice, and a long cool finish that speaks of stones and earth, and special places where the best grapes grow. Beautiful. Rare." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

"The Marius Tannins ™. A treatise. Blackcurrant jubes, faint eucalyptus, brambles and peppery spice. Nose and mouth in agreeance, more jubey in the palate, though that tannin grip sorts that out pretty quick. Flavourtown and then the rolling, stony pucker. Wonderful stuff. It’s a hearty, deep red of easy drinking, but one that sits you back in your seat a bit with its oomph." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

"Juicy, port wine jelly flavour, sage and scrub. It’s medium-bodied, fine lick of stony tannin, some mint perfume in the mix, pulls savoury and a little beefy, with generosity and red berry flavours on a pretty long finish. It’s not ‘classic’ Marius vineyard and pedigree, as such, but gee, it’s a rollicking and tasty drink." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
