2018 S.C. Pannell Dead End Tempranillo
"This captures vibrant, primary flavours of sarsaparilla, juicy red plums, curry leaves and baking spices yet there's complexity, too. Some meaty reduction, jamon and charry oak lend it to a savoury outlook as do the stealth-like tannins." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)Read more about 2018 S.C. 2020 Ricca Terra Bullets Before Cannonballs Red
"A blend of tempranillo, lagrein, aglianico and shiraz, percentages unknown, but I'm assuming the former is dominant as it's full of red licorice and cola, with v-shaped tannins (that start with some volume and then taper to a precise end point). This just works. Plump, fleshy, very savoury, with some meaty reduction adding to its shape alongside charred radicchio bitterness on the finish; yet its core is all juicy, ripe fruit." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)Read more about 2020 Ricca Terra Bullets Before Cannonballs Red
2018 Varney Wines GSM
"White Valley and Blewitt Springs fruit, 60/27/13% old-vine grenache/Clarendon shiraz/mourvèdre. Some whole-bunch carbonic wild-ferment work with the grenache. 13-20 days on skins; matured in barriques (10 months). An exceptional Rhône blend. For the record, I loathe the GSM moniker, seeking wines that sublimate branding and the personality of each component with a juicy mouthful of spicy, Mediterranean herb-doused blue/black-fruit aspersions. This is THAT wine! The tannins, noble, savoury and thirst-slaking. Possibly the finest domestic 'GSM' yet tasted. A mini Gigondas." - Ned Goodwin (Halliday Wine Companion)Read more about 2018 Varney Wines GSM
2020 Aphelion Welkin Project 5255 Malbec
"Part of a creative project out of Langhorne Creek, for which 3 winemakers were offered access to the region’s fruit for the first time. From the Wenzel vineyard, 2 separate blocks co-fermented, then steered via a range of vinification techniques and maturation vessels. The deep purple colour is astounding, aromas of masses of violets, flint, and dark plum cake with baking spices. The palate then turns to pure dark plum and garden herb freshness. High intensity flavours, yet with an ease of flow and fine tannin grip. An exciting malbec expression." - Tony Love (Halliday Wine Companion)Read more about 2020 Aphelion Welkin Project 5255 Malbec
2018 Domaine Naturaliste Discovery Cabernet Sauvignon
"12 months in French oak. Perfect weather and yields in '18, the resulting wines standing on the shoulders of their predecessors. The nose here is tempting to say the least - cassis, raspberry and fields of violets and sage. The palate follows obediently, the acidity being the last thing that swoops in and cleans everything up... what a gorgeous wine. Testament to the year, the hands and the vineyards. Ridiculous price." - Erin Larkin (Halliday Wine Companion)Read more about 2018 Domaine Naturaliste Discovery Cabernet Sauvignon
2018 De Iuliis LDR Shiraz Touriga
"An 80/20% blend with exceptional texture to what I term ‘squeaky' tannins. The flow of the fruit is complex. The flavours run to the beat of a different drum, earthy and dark, and with more conventional structure." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)Read more about 2018 De Iuliis LDR Shiraz Touriga
