About The Pack
Gruner Veltliner is a beautiful grape variety and one that is seriously starting to take flight in Australia.
Though our first Australian Gruner was only released in 2009, our country-wide prowess has come a long way in a short time. Today we are seeing excellent examples popping up all over the land, some that rival in quality those of the variety's home in Austria.
Great Gruners have the razor-sharp acidity of Riesling, the flesh of a Chardonnay and savoury/spicy characters that make them incredibly moreish and a brilliant match to an array of foods.
How do the Aussie examples stack up against the Austrians? With this pack featuring three great examples from both countries, you'll be the judge!
2021 BK Wines Ovum Gruner Veltliner
Brendan Keys tackles the Austrian variety Gruner Veltliner here with great success.
Gruner is thriving in the Adelaide Hills, with plenty of local producers hero-ing this great variety. Brendan has taken cues from the great Austrian producers for his interpretation.
Half the fruit was fermented in barrel, half fermented as whole bunches, then the wine was pressed and sent to ceramic egg to rest on lees before bottling. These winemaking choices have given the wine immense weight. A powerhouse Gruner has emerged.
This is superb drinking here and a unique look at this variety. We love it!

Gruner Veltliner is Austria's flagship grape but if Australia had a flagship area for this vibrant white variety it would undoubtedly be the Adelaide Hills.
CRFT's Longview Vineyard expression is a textural wine but which hold some cracking tension and acidity, along with a chalky mouthfeel.
It's bright and a bit peppery with those Gruner herbal notes that its disciples seek out. It saw some whole-bunch fermentation for extra grip and texture, and a small amount of fermentation in old French oak.
Rounded and balanced is the palate, and it drinks beautifully now.
