About The Pack
Grenache is currently experiencing a golden era in Australia.
A truckload of Australian producers are finally giving the variety its due. From the sandy soils of McLaren Vale and the ancient plantings in the Barossa as well as other pockets of the country, some truly stunning examples of Grenache are emerging.
Here are six of our current favourites that typify the quality that can currently be found if you know where to look. Six benchmark modern producers of the grape are featured here and it's terrific value to boot.
2019 Bondar Junto GSM
In only a few short vintages this dynamic couple have carved out a niche for their eponymous label as one of the most exciting and in demand wineries in McLaren Vale.
Drinkability is writ large across the range. The 'Junto' (Spanish for 'together') is a wine made for easily enjoying with friends and family. The 2019 version is just as good as ever.
The Grenache component a much less than in previous years (88%), the power of the 2019 vintage bringing a richer, more silky wine to bottle on release. This is as delicious as medium-bodied reds get from this part of the world.
Incredibly versatile and impossibly more-ish, Andre and Selina have done it again.Read more about 2019 Bondar Junto GSM
2017 S.C. Pannell Grenache Shiraz Touriga
The S.C. Pannell GST has been a hugely successful wine for Steve Pannell over the last few years, winning multiple accolades across the national Wine Show circuit.
In many ways, this wine typifies Steve's philosophy on Australian red wines. The GST is about freshness and balance, a red wine that puts drinkability and versatility front and centre. All three components of the blend working in harmony.
Steve describes the 2017 as : "A Swiss army wine, drink it with everything!"

2019 Somos Tintito
This is a delicious medium bodied red blend from Ben and Mauricio at Somos wines.
It's a blend of Grenache, Nero d'Avola and a bunch of other bits and pieces built with easy drinking in mind and an 'Italian-ate' feel. The aim here was to create "Vin de soif, made for easy drinking with interest." and they've nailed the MO.
This is a top value little daily drinker and is squarely in no-brainer territory for those chasing a medium-bodied red that is loaded with charisma.Read more about 2019 Somos Tintito
2020 Oliver's Taranga Small Batch Grenache
"The palate... Juicy bliss."
James Halliday (The Australian)
This is a classic example of how killer modern Grenache is today in McLaren Vale.
Corrina Wright's example is bang on. This is a gorgeous sweet and spicy Grenache, with plenty of structure supporting the plush red fruits and old vine earthiness.
Grapes were sourced from the Old Block - traditional bush vines, coming up to sixty years old. This is what McLaren Vale does best.Read more about 2020 Oliver's Taranga Small Batch Grenache
2020 Spinifex Garcon Grenache
The Garçon is Peter Schell's top value Barossa Grenache pegged as a pigeon pair alongside his fantastic Barossa Syrah.
Schell is a Grenache master, subtly coaxing out all of the softness and energy that Grenache grown in this region can display when it's picked and treated just right.
In his own words, Schell dubs this, "a celebration of the variety from its spiritual home in Australia."
He just doesn't miss when it comes to this variety. It's bright, floral and exceptionally seductive. A fantastic buy for those enjoying the modern Grenache revolution that's currently underway right across SA.Read more about 2020 Spinifex Garcon Grenache
