About The Pack
Grenache is currently experiencing a golden era in Australia.
A truckload of Australian producers are finally giving the variety its due. From the sandy soils of McLaren Vale and the ancient plantings in the Barossa as well as other pockets of the country, some truly stunning examples of Grenache are emerging.
Here are six of our current favourites that typify the quality that can currently be found if you know where to look. Six benchmark modern producers of the grape are featured here and it's terrific value to boot.
2020 Adelina Grenache
Adelina are kicking some serious goals as of late. Their stylish packaging, the amazing old vine fruit they utilise, the 'house style' of the wines, all are coming up trumps for this Clare Valley couple.
Once again Col McBryde's new release fits squarely in the 'new wave' of Grenache sweeping the Australian wine industry - fine-boned and high-toned, a bit like Col himself.
The fruit stem from a stunning 80+-year-old vineyard on the Adelina property is left on skins for 20 days in concrete vats prior to pressing to neutral barrels. This extracts maximum character from the fruit in its purest form. Freshness and age-worthiness reign supreme here, and there is even a rock, mineral feel on the finish.Read more about 2020 Adelina Grenache
2020 Cirillo Vincent Grenache
The Cirillo Vincent Grenache is year after year one of the country's best value Grenache.
Marco Cirillo's family lays claim to the world's oldest Grenache vines, the most ancient of them dating back to 1850. The Vincent is the baby of the bunch made from a blend of 80, 90 and 100-year-old vine material.
Vincent is a charismatic character, just like his maker. It bucks the trend of big, sweet, oaky Barossa Grenache and sits firmly in the bright, cheery and gluggable camp. A portion of whole bunches give it a lifted perfume and silky texture, while the use of older French oak and stainless steel ensure this is a lot brighter and bouncier than many of its Barossa counterparts.Read more about 2020 Cirillo Vincent Grenache
2020 Aphelion The Confluence Grenache
Crafting McLaren Vale Grenache is the main game for Rob Mack and Louise Rhodes at Aphelion. It's a game they are very skilled at. Every egg a bird, as they say.
Sourced predominantly from gnarly, 80-year-old bush vines rooted in the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs, this fresh and vital version of Grenache is set decidedly to a "Drink-Me-Now" tempo. It's the composite blend of the three Aphelion Grenaches, combining both the 100% whole berry and 100% whole bunch wines into one seamless wine.Read more about 2020 Aphelion The Confluence Grenache
2019 Bondar Junto GSM
In only a few short vintages this dynamic couple have carved out a niche for their eponymous label as one of the most exciting and in demand wineries in McLaren Vale.
Drinkability is writ large across the range. The 'Junto' (Spanish for 'together') is a wine made for easily enjoying with friends and family. The 2019 version is just as good as ever.
The Grenache component a much less than in previous years (88%), the power of the 2019 vintage bringing a richer, more silky wine to bottle on release. This is as delicious as medium-bodied reds get from this part of the world.
Incredibly versatile and impossibly more-ish, Andre and Selina have done it again.Read more about 2019 Bondar Junto GSM
2018 Sons of Eden Kennedy GSM
The Sons of Eden philosophy is focused around what the Barossa does best, and this Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre blend is a brilliant example of what the label is all about.
Not only that, it's hands down one of the best value GSM's in the country!
It's named after the Kennedy family who owned the 50+ year old, low yielding Grenache vineyard that makes up the majority of this wine. The Shiraz and Mourvedre fruit has similar old vine pedigree giving the wine great concentration, with the restrained use of older French oak really allowing the gorgeous fruit to do the talking.
Rich, ripe and Barossan to the core, the Kennedy is an absolute steal.Read more about 2018 Sons of Eden Kennedy GSM

The S.C. Pannell GST has been a hugely successful wine for Steve Pannell over the last few years, winning multiple accolades across the national Wine Show circuit.
In many ways, this wine typifies Steve's philosophy on Australian red wines. The GST is about freshness and balance, a red wine that puts drinkability and versatility front and centre. All three components of the blend working in harmony.
