About

About the Wine

Macharnudo is an exposed, windswept vineyard a few kms outside of the main sherry town of Jerez de la Frontera. It's incredibly chalky albariza soils produce intense, aromatic and powerful Palomino wines.

This structure and power flows through to the Fino sherries made from this site. With the Bota de Fino 91, the team at Equipo Navazos make a phenomenal wine that combines raciness of the site, and texture and roundness of extended ageing under flor.

So many layers, and so much length - this is Fino as a dramatic fine wine.

About Equipo Navazos

The Equipo Navazos project was started by a group of Spanish Sherry lovers led by wine writer and Sherry guru Jesús Barquín, regular contributor to World of Fine Wine and Professor of Criminology at the University of Granada. These “Sherryphiles” were aware, through their own extensive tastings, of a treasure trove of brilliant Sherries that were sitting, unbottled, in the bodegas of Jerez, Sanlucar and Montilla. Bodegas often have butts or casks (bota) of Sherry whose small volume makes it commercially unviable to bottle separately

The concept behind Equipo Navazos (Team Navazos) was to select specific bota of such wines for individual bottling, unfiltered or lightly filtered (Sherry is typically put through a very firm filtration). The wines were selected for their quality and for their distinct personalities, which would have been a shame to lose in a large blend. Initially these bottlings were intended only for a select group of friends and professionals. Yet the response was so enthusiastic that it became very clear to those behind Equipo Navazos that something important could come of this idea; namely that the opportunity existed to remind the world of just how great Sherry could be. To this end the project was expanded to allow for a small ‘commercial’ release of certain wines to a handful of international markets. After three years, Australia started to get a tiny allocation.

From The Producer

La Bota de Fino 91 “Macharnudo Alto” is a saca made in February-March 2019 from the same batch of casks that already gave us the eight previous and precious editions of La Bota de Fino. This new release, of an estimated average age of ten years, comes now from a selection of casks of the solera, the first and the second criaderas where we have been particularly looking for finesse and freshness, always taking into account it is a mature fino. The nose shows very complex and intense aromas, and a remarkable roundness in the palate (the traditional buttery touch of old finos) as a result of the autolysis of dead “flor” yeasts resting on the bottom of the vessel. This is particularly true of the solera, where the flor is almost exhausted, while in the second criadera the yeast is still very lively and active, which provides the spiciness and pungency that are also notable features of this extraordinary wine. Of course, the first criadera has an intermediate profile between the solera and the second.

This is a wine for connoisseurs, bottled almost unfiltered in order to preserve its golden color and racy character. It can be decidedly enjoyed upon release, but its evolution in bottle will continue to delight consumers for many years, provided it is stored with the same care as any other fine white wine.

"… The nose is spectacular and easy to identify; it has the same character as the Inocente wines. The nose was singing and expressive, with typical aromas but also somehow floral and perfumed. It has volume with lots of autolysis from the lees, with great power but also finesse and balance. Stunning." - Luis Gutierrez (The Wine Advocate)
