About The Pack

In the rapidly changing Australian wine scene, winemakers are looking to countries like Italy with similar climates to ours for grape varieties that can be grown and produced sustainably, and provide a new and wonderful array of flavours and styles for us all to enjoy.  This pack takes you on a tour of the country, sampling six delicious locally grown white wines made from Italian grape varieties.  All are savoury and food friendly, but also just provide delicious drinking on their own.

2018 Koerner Rolle Vermentino

Trust the brothers Koerner to put an interesting spin on an already interesting variety.

This is a Vermentino with some attitude.

Here the boys use a canny combination of skin contact, ageing in a ceramic vessel and old oak to bring extra layers of complexity to a variety often thought of as mono-dimensional.

This is smashability writ large. Full-flavoured and rich, with a delicious creamy core.

Great stuff from this dynamic family team.

2017 Mica Vino Tino

The Mica team of Jo Perry and Tamra Kelly-Washington wanted to make something "tasty and textural", it's fair to say they've nailed the brief.

Vermentino is a variety that loves to have some winemaking thrown at it.

They split the fruit in half, 50% was whole bunch pressed, 50% spent a few days on skins then went to barrel and was lees stirred for three months before bottling.

This process has given some weight and flesh to a typically lean variety. It's fluffy, crunchy, spicy and flat out great to drink.

2018 Unico Zelo Jade & Jasper Fiano

The Unico Zelo owner/winemaking dynamic duo of Brendan and Laura Carter are hugely passionate about Fiano, and they wholeheartedly believe in this variety's suitability to Australia's climate and culture.

So do we, it's a winner.

This comes from the ancient sandy limestone soils on the iconic Ricca Terra Farms vineyard in the Riverland region of South Australia. Like in previous years it's a wonderfully textural wine, but I reckon this release seems a little more balanced and even clean-cut than the '17.

It looks the goods. All up it's delicious to drink, perfectly built for enjoying with food and great value for money.

2018 Coriole Fiano

If you want to see what Australian Fiano is all about, the Coriole version by Mark Lloyd and son Duncan Lloyd is in the top echelon, to be sure.

Boasting the country's first commercial release of this variety in 2005, Coriole have developed an affinity with Fiano and year-in-year-out turn in an excellent example.

The 2017 is in fine form. The Trophy winner for Best White Wine at the 2017 McLaren Vale Wine Show, this is a tasty, textural, versatile white perfect for all occasions.

A brilliant wine no matter which way you dice it, and undoubtedly one of the country's premier Fianos.

2017 Billy Button The Feisty Friulano

Here we have Jo Marsh's 'The Feisty' Friulano, yet another alternative Italian variety doing good things in her beloved Alpine Valleys.

The grape originates from Friuli in North-East Italy, where it makes quite full-bodied and richly flavoured wines. There's only a handful of Friulano in Australia. This has all of that intensity and texture but like all of Jo's wines, they are so refreshing and seamlessly balanced.

This sees a little skin contact to give a little grippiness to the palate and extract a little more flavor. Only tiny volumes made and more than generous price. It's unique, so complex, so very tasty.

2018 Arfion Pinot Grigio

Dave Mackintosh's Arfion label has a good track record with this popular grape, and his style really captures the freshness of 'Grigio' with the texture of 'Gris'.

Unlike the vast majority of Pinot Grigio on the market, his is very much hand-made from start to finish. It comes from the Coombe vineyard in the warmer Lower Yarra Valley area - a site with a great track record for Pinot Gris.

The fruit was hand-picked in the cool early morning to retain freshness and concentration, with whole bunches, older oak and some lees stirring adding nice texture and interest.

It's zippy and refreshing on the one hand, chewy and thought-provoking on the other. A quality Pinot Grigio from Dave and super value.
