About The Pack

The best part of our jobs is sipping and sifting our way through thousands of wines each year to uncover the best small production producers in the country.

There have been some great new inclusions to the DD store over the last couple of months, but with so much new vino coming in, it's hard to catch them all.

Here are six new to DD producers who have really stood out in recent times. If you're one of those wine lovers who love to discover something new, scribble these names down in your 'Little Black Book' for the next time you're on the hunt.

2018 Meltwater Pinot Noir

Winemaker Mike Paterson is obsessed with Marlborough Pinot Noir.

Under the Corofin label, he specialises in single site Pinot Noirs, looking for differences in in terroir to be expessed in each wine. Under the Meltwater label, he's blending sites to give a more general picture of the Marlborough region.

It's light, crisp and spicy - a red fruited crunchy little Pinot Noir with plenty of charisma.

The perfect way to get familiar with Pinot from this part of New Zealand.

2017 Terrason Gamay

This is a traditionally made Gamay from the King Valley in Victoria.

The fruit was fermented as 100% whole bunches as is the way in the variety's spiritual home of Beaujolais. There was no additions during the winemaking process, it's pure Gamay love all the way.

It's a wine that shows the crunchy bright red fruits and earthy characters synonymous with the Old World examples of the variety.

To find the rustic charm and glorious drinkability of this style of Gamay in Australia is rare, even rarer at this price.

2018 Arno Wine Co. Grenache

Old vine Barossa Grenache is one of Ruby and Craig's true passions.

The vineyard that supplies them the fruit for this wine is located in the Greenock sub-region on the Western side of the Barossa. These gnarled old bush vines were planted in 1920, today, they yield fruit that is vibrant and perfumed - old vines making youthful wines.

They treat it gently in the winery. The fruit mostly detemmed then aged in decade old hogshead barrels. These inert vessels impart virtually no flavour on the wine so all you see is pure Barossa Grenache in all its rosy glory.

The couple sum it up well, "it is a wine for ‘drinkin, not thinkin’ – just a celebration of pure, delicious old vine Barossa Grenache."

2018 Ari's Natural Wine Co. Big Red

If you're looking for natural wines that show a bit of class, this is a great option.

This is Shiraz from the Murrumbateman region in NSW. The fruit is all destemmed and fermented wild in barrel then basket pressed by hand before going to bottle. There's no additions at any point. No preservatives added. And the wine is clean as a whistle.

Yes, it's a natural wine, but it's also just a very good wine. It's cool climate Shiraz without any artifice.

A very impressive release from this emerging lo-fi winemaker in NSW.

Only 40 dozen made.

2017 Becker Syrah

An exciting new Hunter Valley project on the rise here under the Becker banner.

James and Meagan Becker have a small plot of land in the Hunter Valley which is currently undergoing organic certification. They are aiming to release single vineyard wines that express the unique qualities of the Hunter Valley with as little intervention as possible. Their first releases look very promising.

These are classy, well built wines that deliver great value for money. The Syrah is slippery and sleek, peppered with spice and a hint of oak.

This is a great new addition to the Hunter Valley wine scene. A top vintage for the Hunter Valley captured perfectly by this young couple.

2017 Edenflo Syrah

Winemaker Andrew Wardlaw has been making low-intervention wines in the Barossa & Eden Valleys since 1996.

His gentle touch is producing gorgeous, seductive wines with a true sense of place. He uses basket presses and gravity to move the juice around, preserving all the natural deliciousness of his Eden Valley Syrah.

Fruit from five different vineyard combines here into a spicy, sexed up Syrah that is seriously remarkable value for money.

If you feel like dipping your toe into natural wines, this is a safe place for you to start.
