Cracking Cab Franc Pack

Six striking Cabernet Francs that gives you a fresh modern Australian look at the variety.

About The Pack

Cabernet Franc has made a massive resurgence in Australia over the last few years, taking a place beside more notable Summery reds like Pinot Noir and Gamay in the fresh-and-smashable reds section of good wine lists and wine bars.

Here are six of our favourite Aussie examples at the moment, some are a little more classic in style, some more in the 'nouveau' drining end of the Cab Franc pool.

Each are throughly enjoyable and a perfect Summer option for Cabernet Sauvignon lovers who want something lighter and more energetic for warm weather drinking.

2020 Somos Cabernet Franc

For freshness and vitality in the land of Bordeaux varieties, the modern expressions of Cabernet Franc popping up all over the country really take the cake.

This lively version of the variety comes from Somos - two young winemakers and free spirits in South Australia making wines from varieties they see as underrepresented.

This was picked and pressed early, matured in mostly old French oak, every decision along the winemaking path looking for immediate drinkability.

2020 Gertie Cabernet Franc

Small production Cabernet Franc, from very special blocks in the Clare Valley, the only downside is that there is so little Franc left in the valley.

Redcurrant and blackcurrant, exotic spices, rosemary and rosy perfume. Medium bodied, delicious crunch of sappy fruit and spice, almost a milky feel, fine silty tannin, and this kind of rosehip tea perfume trailing on a lets-go-again finish.

A little bit of whole-bunch, a few weeks on skins post-ferment to build some structure and depth. Unfined unfiltered, and oh so limited.

2020 Adelina Cabernet Franc

Satiny, mid-weight Clare Valley red, replete with cherry and strawberry aromatics, and a pure, clean-living palate.

This is Adelina's second Cab Franc release from the now-certified Smith vineyard in the Polish Hill River sub-region. Last year's zero sulphur wine was a little on the wild side - a tiny bit of sulphur in the 2020 release means this is all fresh, delicious, red-berry juiciness, with a herbal, peppery backbone.

Fruit was all destemmed, with just a few days spent on skins, then six months quiet maturation in old french barriques. Joyous wine.

2021 Latta Benevolent Cabernet Franc

"Sappy texture, fine sheath of tannins, soft landing and a gentle pucker to close. Refreshing red. A ripper."
Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Owen Latta with a new Cab Franc - a fresh, zippy wine, alpine in feel and just delicious to drink.

The source is Sally's Paddock vineyard in the Pyrenees, planted back in 1973.

Super fresh, crunchy, little bit of a spritz, uber fresh and bright - It's a juicy litte jubey number and great as a young wine. If you're keen, try popping it in the fridge for a minute. Chill it then drill it.

2020 Linnaea Oblio Cabernet Franc Malbec

This wine is the showcase of Michelle and Dan’s new future-forward vineyard planting. Vines crafted from their favourite clones of these varieties on their favourite rootstock, chosen to handle the intense rocky outcrop at the top of the vineyard.

Red and blue flowers, berries, a little pepper, and spice. It’s understated, yet quite intense of flavour, with tart acidity and fine tightly packed tannin. Quite different, though very charming.

Their farming here is a concentration of their novel Ag-tech innovations, interwoven eco-friendly biodiversity, precision viticulture, and a focus on mitigating climate change.

2020 Frankland Estate Organic Franc

An exceptional Australian Cabernet Franc, from a single vineyard, certified organic, in the isolated Great Southern area of WA.

The expected varietal aromatics of red fruits and violets are joined by a lovely dusky pepperiness. The palate is savoury and fleshy, with intense coiled fruit and some meaty, gamey notes towards the finish, which has some supportive gravelly tannins.

High quality release from one of the country's very top wineries. Only a small batch produced, so not much to go around, sadly.
