About The Pack
Brash Higgins is the label of winemaking American-turned-honorary-Aussie, Brad Hickey.
In his former life, Hickey was one of America's top sommeliers, working for many years crafting some of New York's finest wine lists. He came to Australia and fell in love with McLaren Vale and local vigneron Nicole Thorpe, with whom he now produces highly characterful, minimalist wines from their much loved Omensetter vineyard.
Hickey's wines are extremely expressive. They fall in two camps - the wines sourced from Omensetter vineyard and those sourced from friends around the Vale and the warm, dry Riverlands.
If you want 'classic' McLaren Vale, or if you want the true avant-garde, it's all available in the Brash Higgins range.
2017 Brash Higgins ZBO Zibbibo
For those unfamiliar with Zibibbo, it is an ancient member of the muscat family, originating in the Mediterranean which has found a new home in South Australia. The fruit for this is sourced from Ricca Terra Farms in the warm and sunny Riverland. But what really distinguishes this wine is the winemaking behind it: the giant golf ball sized berries are hand-picked and destemmed into 200l clay amphorae eggs where the wine sits on skins for 7 months.
It's a cloudy, unique wine, but incredibly well executed. Mike Bennie gave the 2017 vintage a great write-up calling it, "Complex and compelling, something to talk about around the table." in his 93 point review. And he's dead right, Brad picked a little earlier this year so it's a little tighter than past releases but no less interesting. Interesting and delicious, that’s this ‘ZBO’.Read more about 2017 Brash Higgins ZBO Zibbibo
2017 Brash Higgins R/SM Riesling Semillon
The ‘R/SM’ is Brash Higgins' single vineyard “field blend” of two of the most underrated white varieties in the country, Riesling and Semillon.
The two varieties are dry grown side by side on a tiny vineyard in the foothills of McLaren Vale. Both varieties are picked on the same day, basket pressed and co-fermented in old French barriques. These two varieties strike a remarkable balance and harmony.
It's a "Delicious, refreshing stuff" according to Mike Bennie and without a doubt, one of the best releases of this wine to date.Read more about 2017 Brash Higgins R/SM Riesling Semillon
2017 Brash Higgins NYMPH Rosé
The NYMPH has undergone a facelift this year - no longer a crisp blend of aromatic whites, this year vintner Brad Hickey has his first swing at a Rosé and hits it straight out of the park.
This is Cinsault and and Carignan from a neighbour's block in McLaren Vale. Texture and acidity deftly woven throughout the wine by Hickey, it's a Rosé with a little more under the hood.
Mike Bennie loved the first release calling it, "a stellar Rosé" and the wine is absolutely worth the praise.Read more about 2017 Brash Higgins NYMPH Rosé
2017 Brash Higgins CINS Cinsault
This is a new addition to the Brash Higgins range. Following on from Brad's pursuit of freshness in Cabernet Franc, here he picks up the lesser-known Rhone variety Cinsault and runs a similar course.
There are few varietal Cinsaults in McLaren Vale where Shiraz and Grenache take the lion's share off attention for Rhone varieties, but after this release there may be a few more popping up before you know it.
Mike Bennie gave this a very high recommendation in his 95 point appraisal of the 2017 release. Brad didn't make much so you'll need to be quick if you want to snap up some of this beauty for yourself.Read more about 2017 Brash Higgins CINS Cinsault
2016 Brash Higgins NDV Nero D'Avola
The NDV is considered by many to be the premier Nero d'Avola in Australia. With a string of sensational releases under his belt, Brad Hickey has elevated this humble Sicilian variety to a new level in Australia over the years since his first release.
Hickey makes his Nero in an authentic, Sicilian style - full of spice, tannin and energy. It's naturally fermented with wild yeasts in a bees-wax lined clay amphora. The constant search for freshness, drive and detail in this oft-times simple and smashable variety is what sets the Brash Higgins NDV apart.
It's a unique and slightly wild-eyed wine, but one that has become something of a benchmark for the variety.
Absolutely worth trying if you are being enchanted by the rise of Italian varieties on Australian shores!Read more about 2016 Brash Higgins NDV Nero D'Avola
2016 Brash Higgins SHZ Shiraz
A McLaren Vale producer's range would not be complete without a Shiraz, and Brad Hickey’s (AKA Brash Higgins) does not disappoint.
The fruit for his ‘SHZ’ was hand selected from the now organically certified Omensetter vineyard in the Vale, a vineyard renowned for producing a distinctively savoury style of Shiraz. The 2016 vintage in McLaren Vale lent itself to making powerful and spicy styles of Shiraz, a vintage that played right into Brad's hands.
A wine of balance, finesse and class, a different slant on the McLaren Vale flagship variety. This is where interest and deliciousness meet in Shiraz land.Read more about 2016 Brash Higgins SHZ Shiraz
