From Geelong’s Surf Coast, it’s a single-vineyard red with the concentration for the cellar and the freshness that makes cool-climate Syrah so good to drink.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe fruit comes from Brown Magpie Vineyard, where the Syrah was planted in 2001 on sandy loam over clay, estuary marl and limestone. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHalf the fruit was fermented as whole bunches, followed by nine months in French oak, a quarter new. That generous whole-bunch component adds savoury detail and structure around the fruit.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBlackberry and dark cherry come with violet, black olive and dark spice. It’s medium-bodied but concentrated, with bright acidity and persistent, fine tannins giving the finish plenty of length. It's the structure of this wine that really set us back.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOpen it with any red-meat dish or keep a few bottles for the next decade.
