This is a serious single-vineyard white from Geelong’s Surf Coast, with barrel-fermented texture and the structure to improve over time as well.

The fruit comes from Brown Magpie Vineyard, planted in 2002 on sandy loam over clay, estuary marl and limestone. It’s a different site from Mulline’s Sutherlands Creek release, giving the range another reason to explore Geelong Sauvignon.

Whole-bunch pressed fruit went into just two elongated French oak ‘cigar’ barrels, one new and one used. Natural fermentation with full solids and nine months in barrel built weight and texture around the fruit.

Nectarine and preserved citrus come with lemongrass, a little floral lift and gentle smoky oak. It’s concentrated and creamy through the middle, with fresh acidity and a long, chalky finish keeping everything firmly in shape.

Give it some air now, or another year or two in bottle to open up. A two-barrel release with the intensity, texture and staying power to earn its place alongside your best Chardonnays.

97+ points
"Lovely persistence and tension on the long, chalky palate ...
