He works with a handful of cool sites around Macedon, and his wines have a huge following for their purity, freshness and lightness of touch.

Doug's Vineyard is a single-site Pinot from the Macedon Ranges - one of Australia's coolest mainland wine regions, where Pinot ripens slowly and keeps its natural tension.

It's bright, cool and quite compact, with tart cherry, a tangy rose hip edge and a little herbal twist. The tannins are fine and lacy, and there's just a hint of something savoury, a bit gamey, a bit earthy, sitting underneath. Lovely now with roast chicken, mushrooms on toast or a duck ragu, and it'll pick up more savoury detail over the next five to eight years.

Elegant, restrained and seriously drinkable. A smart pick if you love your Pinot on the fresh, fine-boned side, and a great way into Joshua Cooper's wines.

94 points
"A sleek pinot noir of compact nature with a sheath of very fine, lacy tannins...Elegance and restraint here.
