Description

The 2024 Hoddles Creek SKINS Pinot Gris is the result of over a decade of experimentation and a desire to push boundaries. Inspired by Franco D’Anna’s time on Mount Etna in Sicily, where the philosophy is that the true flavour of certain varieties lies in the skins, this wine takes Pinot Gris in a bold and exciting direction.

Made entirely from estate-grown fruit in the Upper Yarra Valley, this skin-contact Pinot Gris showcases Franco’s innovative approach. After careful vineyard management to optimise fruit exposure, the grapes are fermented on their skins—treated much like a red wine—to extract complexity and texture. A decade of fine-tuning has resulted in a wine that’s unique, layered, and deeply expressive.

The 2024 SKINS offers aromas of red apple, dried orange peel, and subtle spice. The palate is textured and savoury, with flavours of blood orange and tea-like tannins balanced by a refreshing acidity. It’s a wine that’s as intriguing as it is drinkable, designed for curious drinkers ready to explore the possibilities of Pinot Gris.

With its small-batch production and distinctive character, the 2024 SKINS is a standout in the Hoddles Creek lineup—a wine born from passion, patience, and a determination to challenge conventions.

"It's not pinot gris as most drinkers would know it, but it's both an exemplary example of the style and a wine that would partner with a wide variety of foods. 500ml."

"There’s a slight herbal stalky element to the wine too, a light amaro thing, though I like that as it adds a little extra frisson. I love this wine. Gris is the word."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

95 points - "The wine spent two weeks on skins before being hand plunged until dryness. The result, no surprise, is a wine with a bright, burnt orange hue. Aromas of fragrant pears, ripe red apples and lifted florals lead onto the palate, which is gently savoury with pithy phenolics and bright acidity. It's not pinot gris as most drinkers would know it, but it's both an exemplary example of the style and a wine that would partner with a wide variety of foods. 500ml." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Compnanion)

94 points - "Poached strawberry, brown pear, almond paste. It tightens up a bit with something of a pink grapefruit flavour in with the nutty red fruits, has plenty of pleasing grainy tannin grip, a good amount of crunch, and a finish of excellent length and chalky traction. There’s a slight herbal stalky element to the wine too, a light amaro thing, though I like that as it adds a little extra frisson. I love this wine. Gris is the word." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

    Orange is the new Red.

First time Orange Wine. Very impressed, colour is more like a light shinny Pinot Noir. Strawberry cherry cranberry, with a bit of that sweet sour thing going on. Unexpectedly pleasant dry grippy finish. Had this with fish, but would be great also with a spicy Asian dish like a pad kee mao.

    Textural explosion.

This has heaps going on and would be great with food - lot's of spice and Campari notes. As apposed to their normal Gris the skin action is really turned up so need to like that style.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
