2024-garagiste-terre-de-feu-pinot-noir
2024 Garagiste Terre de Feu Pinot Noir

Barney Flanders created Terre de Feu after noticing that one small corner of the Merricks Grove Pinot was giving him something different. The vines produced smaller bunches and fruit with enough concentration to warrant its own bottling, which he did for the first time in 2013.

That half-acre has become one of Garagiste’s signature wines. Its name, meaning ‘Land of Fire’, refers to the red clay running through the plot, and it’s the only Pinot in the range fermented entirely as whole bunches.

For the 2024, Barney gently foot-trod the fruit and allowed fermentation to start naturally, keeping it on skins for close to a month. Ten months in barrel followed, with 25% new oak, before bottling without fining or filtration.

The perfume is distinctly floral and crazy spicy, with earthy, smoky notes and a savoury tea-like character adding depth. It's powerful but tightly wound and should perform well in the cellar as past vintages have. It's a distinctive expression of a very small patch of the Mornington Peninsula and one of Barney's favourite wines to make.

95 points
"The whole bunches impart a strongly fragrant, earthy, sappy, twiggy and smoky character. It’s deep, complex and rich with dark cherries, warm tar, licorice, chinotto and wet iron. Fuller bodied, densely packed with tannins, cedary smoky oak and spices, yet plenty of refreshing acidity lifts and extends the finish. A wine for food and better with some mellow time in bottle."
- Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2572/9722/files/2023GaragisteTerredeFeuPinotNoir_cf12fd6a-d1c4-48db-977e-8b8555d94ebc.webp?v=1741822072
