Description

The King’s Wood has always sat at the more refined end of the McLaren Vale Shiraz spectrum, and in 2023 it hits a fresh high note. Sourced from a southeast-facing patch of ironstone and sandy soils on Block 12, this is a wine of tension, depth and lifted savoury charm.

With 20% whole bunches in the ferment and the rest carefully berry sorted, it spent around 20 days on skins before gentle basket pressing into large format French and Austrian foudres. Oak plays a quiet supporting role here, letting the fruit do the heavy lifting.

It's a Shiraz that has always leaned into elegance over excess. There’s plum skin, black cherry, tapenade, cured meat and pepper spice, with fine, framing tannins and a cooling sense of energy. The 2023 vintage lends even more aromatic clarity and detail.

This is Yangarra’s take on Shiraz with finesse - a wine that speaks more to Northern Rhône inspiration than McLaren muscle, all while staying firmly rooted in the identity of its site. A serious, structured, beautifully poised wine.

"Blood plums, cured meat, mulberries, blueberry bush… tightly wound notes of cherry confit, iodine, ferric earth, mocha… exceptionally well constructed."
- Ryan Montgomery (JamesSuckling.com)

"Blackberry pastille, blueberry, tart boysenberry and black cherry… malted barley, roasted meat, coffee, star anise… underlying finesse… Excellent."
- Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

97 points – “The nose is incredibly complex and deeply scented, with aromas of blood plums, cured meat, mulberries, blueberry bush and dried herbs. The palate is full-bodied with seamless tannins and bright acidity, giving tightly wound notes of cherry confit, iodine, ferric earth, mocha and a slight metallic finish. Exceptionally well constructed, with years ahead of it to integrate. Drink or hold. Screw cap.” – Ryan Montgomery (JamesSuckling.com)

96 points – “From the 2.3ha Block 12, a southeast-facing sand and ironstone outcrop; 20% whole bunch, with 80% sorted and crushed; matured in 2500L French and Austrian oak for 16 months. This opens with a little reductive cloak, which is appealing in itself, if a little occluding of the fruit. Initially at least. There’s a Rhône-like feel, with a spicy, smoky angle. Fruit flavours roll through blackberry pastille, blueberry, tart boysenberry and black cherry, accented with malted barley, rolling tobacco, roasted meat, freshly ground coffee, star anise, cassia and allspice. There’s an underlying finesse here, as with all the ‘23s, both red and white. Excellent.” – Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "Wow, the colour here is extraordinary. It’s deep and dark but with a bright luminosity. Captivating aromas reveal an earthy, slightly rustic character lifted with vibrant plummy blackberry fruits, overlaid with a sprinkle of dried herbs. The palate is a joy, with its seamless integration and purity of fruit. Oak has been so well managed." - Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

96 points - "Sourced from Block 12 (2.3 Ha) which sits on a south-east facing, ironstone sandy outcrop. There’s a compelling nutty and woody spice complexity straight out of the gate with hazelnut, cassia bark, pine needle and softly sweet clove emanating to draw you in. A good swirl of the glass reveals a subtly charry and ashy note along with tilled earth and paperbark. It’s all about savouriness over fruit to begin with, in part thanks to a sheath of reduction, but some fruit notes do appear in the form of blackberry pastille and blood plum with herb-crusted meat, freshly roasted coffee beans and gentle dark chocolate adding to the show. The palate follows suit in its savoury aesthetic highlighting mocha, dried herbs, meat and iodine over black cherry, blackberry and subtle pops of blueberry with a lifted and iodine-mineral feel. All of this before an assertion of fine-but-firm tannins frame it through a mocha-laced finish with cassia bark permeating the mouth perfume. There’s a lifted and mineral feel to the palate, it glides along without a hint of weightiness. Another class act." - Tom Kline (Wine Pilot)

96 points - "Very deep and bright purple-red colour, glowing in the glass. Powerful intensity of black pepper, aniseed, blackberry, dried and cured meat aromas, all in remarkable detail for such a young shiraz. Glorious mouth-filling flavour of intensity and vitality, the energy positively bursting through the mouth with vitality and persistence. A smashing shiraz now, and is sure to have a great future." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

95 points – “Impenetrable core, deep ruby to the rim. Full nose of blackberry and blueberry with roasting coffee and bitter chocolate notes. Palate holds a mirror to the nose but has further savoury meaty undertones that create a wonderful depth and umami character. Flows incredibly long, tannins finely ripened to ensure that line carries without showing any exertion, the finish a fan of complexity and poise.” – Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

91 points – “The 2023 Shiraz King’s Wood is a more gently framed expression under this label, with cola, dried meat and clove aromas with a subtle dusting of celery salt. Young and tightly bound, the oak is a little heavy-handed for the underlying fruit ripeness, which tightens up on the finish.” – Angus Hughson (Vinous)

    Elegant McLaren Vale

Beautiful drop this one. Elegant Shiraz, very well balanced. Would definitely buy again and pop some away for the cellar for about 10 years I reckon. Great value considering the quality

Yangarra

Yangarra Estate is one of a small group of powerhouse wineries to raise its head from the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale. Their wines are made entirely from an amazing old bush vine single vineyard, with the 2016 Halliday Winemaker of the Year, Peter Fraser, pulling the reins as winemaker. They are a certified biodynamic wine producer, and have even been named International Winery of the Year, twice!

They specialise in varieties found in the Rhone Valley. In the reds, their Grenache is as good as any in the land and is truly world class, with Shiraz and Mourvedre not far behind. The same applies to whites, the Roussanne expressions from Fraser’s experimentation with ceramic eggs are some of the most interesting in the country. In time, each of the 13 Rhone varieties will be grown on the Yangarra block.

A premium benchmark for the Blewitt Springs sub-region, and one of the country's modern day icon producers.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
