Description

A single-site Grenache from one of the most storied vineyards in McLaren Vale, this small-batch bottling sees Yangarra and Pete Fraser flex their winemaking muscle just five minutes up the road in Clarendon.

Sourced from dry-grown bush vines planted in 1962 on the Hickinbotham estate, this is Grenache of depth and finesse, shaped by the cooler 2023 season and the vineyard’s high elevation and sandy soils. The fruit was handpicked, gently crushed and fermented in cocciopesto amphorae, where it stayed on skins for a full six months - a bold yet gentle approach that amplifies perfume and purity.

The result is an incredibly fine, lifted expression: red cherry and blood orange, a flicker of spice, and silky tannins that carry the wine with subtle power. It’s the first vintage with full organic and biodynamic certification from this block, and it shows in a wine that hums with energy and site expression.

A standout in any vintage, but in 2023, this is Grenache with a light touch and serious pedigree.

"Pale in the glass… red cherry and sour black cherry, Baharat spicing, warm concrete, struck rock… beguiling is the perfume… utterly individual and absolutely world class."
- Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Perfumed and floral aromas… wild raspberries, rose petals, ocean spray… strawberries, sweet spices and cassia bark… very fresh."
- Ryan Montgomery (JamesSuckling.com)

97 points – “This is pale in the glass, fragrant, expressly savoury and built on an energetic tension of fine tannin and vigorous acidity. This has a little more flesh and fruitfulness than the Ovitelli, but it’s neither particularly fleshy nor fruitful. And there’s much charm in that. Red cherry and sour black cherry, dried rose petals, Baharat spicing, pomegranate, clove, mace, dried orange peel and warm concrete, struck rock – it’s one of those wines that I just can’t stop smelling, so beguiling is the perfume. The structure is just as compelling, with insistent sandy, chalky tannins and a seam of electric acidity pulling the flavours long. Utterly individual and absolutely world class.” – Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points – “Light ruby with purple shining at the rim. Bright raspberry fruit with a touch of smoky flint and ground spices lift from the glass. Palate is light and lithe but there’s an intensity to the fruit that demands attention. Red berries, anise, cumin and ground mixed peppercorn notes all show as it flows across the tongue. Lifting acidity and a firm gravel tannic framework all ensure focus and carry, allowing it to continue showing its layers for an age, eventually closing with a refreshing dryness.” – Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

95 points - "Bright medium-light purple-red colour and a sweet almost jammy raspberry jelly aroma, intense and deep, with great penetration and a firm sheen of supporting tannins. Mixed spice and red berry flavours, juicy and sweetly ripe. A deliicous grenache indeed." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

95 points - "100% Grenache taken from 1962 planted bush vines in the Hickenbotham Clarendon Vineyard Block 301. 100% destemmed, crushed, and tipped into ‘cocciopesto’ stone amphorae where a gentle maceration took place before remaining on skins for around 6 months. Matured in amphorae for a total of 10 months. McLaren Vale Grenache of this calibre achieves brightness and purity alongside detail and structure. Red liquorice, maraschino cherry, cranberry, cherry blossom, warm sand, Chinese five spice, orange peel. There’s a lot going on here and it’s condensed into an intense aromatic profile that balances bright red fruitedness with savoury seasoning. There’s some dried herbs that emerge with air adding a garrigue-driven Rhone feel, and some emergent dried rose and subtle clove. The palate is superbly bright and piquant with a cool, mineral feel sitting high in the mouth yet with such great intensity. Power without weight. Cranberry and red cherry notes intersperse with garrigue, warm sand, red liquorice, bitter amaro, and brown spice before a sheath of chalky tannins hold sway, framing it all up and drawing it to long, powdery length. A charming and complex wine." - Tom Kline (Wine Pilot)

95 points – “Perfumed and floral aromas of wild raspberries, rose petals, orange rind and ocean spray. The palate is medium-bodied with focused acidity and integrated tannins, giving notes of strawberries, sweet spices and cassia bark. Very fresh, with an underlying tension. Drink or hold. Screw cap.” – Ryan Montgomery (JamesSuckling.com)

95 points - "A delightfully expressive medium-bodied Grenache from bush vines planted in 1962 on the Hickinbotham vineyard. The winemaking technique using amphorae has produced a wine with structure, palate feel and a beautiful deft lightness of touch. Aromas of cherry and rose petals with a subtle earthy backdrop. This is about preserving the purity and freshness of Grenache, which it does in spades." - Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

    Great Grenache

Prefer this wine over the Yangarra Ovitelli, it is a fuller bodied wine and better integrated.

    Dark brooding newcomer

Towards the darker, more potent end of the new Grenache scale. Deeply scented nose, dark cherry and plum with irony hints. Superbly worked palate, pleasantly fine gritty tannins provide a strong framework for the potent dark fruits. A keeper.

From a site whose slopes are steeped in rich history, we source this Grenache from unirrigated bush vines planted in 1962 on the Hickinbotham Clarendon vineyard. Its distinctive fruit is nurtured with a gentle wild fermentation and matured in grand ‘cocciopesto’ amphorae. Capturing a contrasting expression of detailed perfume and a loose knit weave of tannins.

2023 VINTAGE SUMMARY

The growing season began with significantly higher than average rainfall. The cool, wet conditions continued through Spring, setting us up for balanced canopies and lower yields. La Niña weather patterns forecast cooler temperatures and continued rainfall for harvest. We were able to enhance vineyard practices such as shoot thinning and leaf removal to promote airflow, reduce mildew and increase sun exposure to bunches. From our experience, a cold vintage in a warm region can produce some of the best wines. Due to the cultural practices implemented, we were able to pick the majority of the vineyard in a three-week window prior to Easter, completed in early April. Wines produced from this vintage will be some of the prettiest and most delicate from the Estate.

Yangarra

Yangarra Estate is one of a small group of powerhouse wineries to raise its head from the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale. Their wines are made entirely from an amazing old bush vine single vineyard, with the 2016 Halliday Winemaker of the Year, Peter Fraser, pulling the reins as winemaker. They are a certified biodynamic wine producer, and have even been named International Winery of the Year, twice!

They specialise in varieties found in the Rhone Valley. In the reds, their Grenache is as good as any in the land and is truly world class, with Shiraz and Mourvedre not far behind. The same applies to whites, the Roussanne expressions from Fraser’s experimentation with ceramic eggs are some of the most interesting in the country. In time, each of the 13 Rhone varieties will be grown on the Yangarra block.

A premium benchmark for the Blewitt Springs sub-region, and one of the country's modern day icon producers.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
