Description

Andrew Marks continues to impress with the The Wanderer Upper Yarra Valley Chardonnay, a wine that beautifully reflects the cooler climate vineyard it hails from.

This Chardonnay comes from the same Yellingbo site as his Upper Yarra Pinot Noir, where the cane-pruned I10V1 clone vines thrive in volcanic soils. Andrew's approach to this wine is all about finesse and restraint, allowing the vineyard's unique character to take centre stage.

The grapes were whole-bunch pressed and transferred directly into barrels with full solids, undergoing wild fermentation. This Chardonnay was aged in a mix of old French oak barrels with just a touch of new oak to add complexity, and it remained on lees until bottling, untouched. The result is a Chardonnay with subtle layers of bright citrus, a hint of stone fruit, and a delicate, creamy texture that lingers on the palate.

It's a fine, persistent Chardonnay of incredibly high class. With only 130 dozen made, this limited release speaks quietly but confidently of its origins, offering elegance and depth that will only grow with time.

"Light yellow colour with a reserved, fruit-driven and laid-back bouquet that brings to mind lemon/citrus, white flowers, and subtle creamy lees nuances. Oak is very much down-played. The palate while delicate and restrained is very intense and poised, with precision and focus and a long, long carry. A smashing chardonnay of its type."

93+ points - "This is a cool chardonnay with pear, green apple, stonefruit, crushed fennel and chalk characters flowing elegantly throughout. It sits in the lean-and-long camp but there’s yet genuine flavour on offer, and certainly enough to satisfy. Acidity gives this wine a mouthwatering aspect, and it finishes with plenty of run. This is a good 2-3 years from really hitting its drinking stride, but it will be very good." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

The Wanderer Chardonnay comes from the same vineyard as our Upper Yarra Pinot Noir. Cane pruned I10V1 clone vines. The grapes were whole bunch pressed then run into barrel with full solids the next day. Wild fermentation, left on lees without stirring until bottling. Fermentation and elevage in old french barrels. Only two barrels made a puncheon 500L and a hogshead 300L. Only 80 doz made.

The Wanderer

The Wanderer is Andrew Marks’ personal venture, allowing him to step beyond his family’s Gembrook Hill vineyard to craft wines that reflect his deep winemaking experience. Raised at Gembrook Hill, one of the Yarra Valley’s pioneering vineyards, Andrew’s path was shaped by early exposure to viticulture and formal training at the University of Adelaide. His work at Penfolds, along with vintages in France and Spain, honed his ability to blend traditional techniques with a modern, thoughtful approach.

Under The Wanderer label, Andrew produces wines that express the unique character of each vineyard with minimal intervention. His delicate Pinot Noir, refined Chardonnay, and Rhone-inspired Syrah showcase finesse and precision, capturing the natural nuances of the fruit. These wines are all about subtlety and complexity, evolving naturally over time to reveal their layers.

Produced in small quantities, The Wanderer wines are highly sought after and known to sell out quickly. Each limited release reflects Andrew’s journey and his dedication to crafting wines that tell a story—of place, of vintage, and of his evolution as a winemaker. For those who appreciate elegance and nuance, The Wanderer offers something truly special, albeit fleeting.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
