Description

This is Mullineux doing what they do best - blending old-vine fruit from across the Swartland into a white that’s rich in texture but never heavy. Chenin Blanc leads the way, backed by small parcels of Clairette Blanche, Semillon Gris, Viognier and a few others, all from dry-farmed bush vines up to 65 years old.

The 2023 is broad and layered straight out of the gate - citrus peel, baked orchard fruit, a bit of florals and gentle grip from time in foudre and barrel. There's that hallmark leesy creaminess too, sitting comfortably alongside the acidity. It’s generous, sure, but there’s a salty edge and some lift that keeps it all moving.

It’s one of those whites that plays across the whole palate - plush but precise - and feels like it could take on just about anything at the table. Another strong vintage from Chris and Andrea, still quietly leading the way for Swartland’s new guard.

95 points
"Substantial but completely harmonious – excellent fruit density, brisk acidity and a dry finish."
- Christian Eedes

95 points - "60% Chenin Blanc, 15% Semillon, 13% Clairette Blanche, 7% Grenache Blanc, 5% Viognier and 3% Verdelho. Matured for 11 months in a combination of older barrels and foudre. Citrus, peach, herbs, ginger and a little waxy character on the nose. This vintage is substantial but completely harmonious – excellent fruit density, brisk acidity and a dry finish. Alcohol is 14% and the wine has good texture and weight." - Christian Eedes

    Seriously delicious textured wine

Fascinating SA blend, very textured, great food wine.

Vineyard Notes:

Our 2023 Old Vines White continues the marriage of old vine Chenin Blanc with Mediterranean varieties planted on the Granite, Schist and Iron based soils of the Swartland. The incredible texture and backbone of the blend is brought by the low yielding old-vine Chenin Blanc, grown on all three of our focus soil types. The Clairette Blanche and Grenache Blanc add layers of salinity and freshness and its opulent fragrance is from the Viognier, Semillon Gris and Verdelho. These vineyards are up to sixty-eight years old, and all sustainably farmed.

Production Notes:

Pressed whole-bunch, the juice is then racked to barrel for fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and lasts up to 10 weeks. The wine is left on its lees without additional sulphur until spring. During this time the wine finished malolactic fermentation. The barrels are racked and blended just before the following vintage and the wine is bottled unfiltered.

Maturation:

11 months in 3rd to 5th fill French oak 500L barrels and two new 2000L Foudre

Mullineux

Located in South Africa's Swartland region, Mullineux, founded by Chris and Andrea Mullineux in 2007, has swiftly become a top-tier wine brand, celebrated locally and internationally. After working in France, South Africa, and California, the Mullineuxs chose Swartland for its ancient granite and schist soils. Their dedication paid off, earning them over fifty 5-star ratings from Platter’s South African Wine Guide and multiple Winery of the Year titles.

Their winemaking philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the terroir to shine. They work with sustainable growers and cultivate their own vineyards at Roundstone Farm. Notable wines include Syrah, Chenin Blanc, and a luxurious Straw Wine. Their single-terroir wines particularly showcase the Swartland's diverse soils.

With a name meaning 'Watermill' in French, Mullineux is deeply connected to the Swartland, embodying the region's rich heritage and bright future in every bottle.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
