Description

Hoddles Creek, under the guidance of Franco D'Anna, continue to push the boundaries of value for money in Australian wine. This latest release of their much-loved Pinot Gris is a brilliant value proposition - and arguably the best pound-for-pound Gris in the country.

Unlike many Pinot Gris/Grigio, this is made with care and intent. The fruit is picked in two stages; the first is foot stomped to allow the juice to make contact with the skins, picking up vital phenolics and texture, before naturally fermenting and being sent to barrel. The second batch was made, in essence, like a red wine - fermented on skins for a week and pressed once dry.

It has flavour, it has texture, it has drinkability. If you want to see this variety in full flight, you need to try this wine. At this price, it's as good as Pinot Gris gets.

"Hoddles Creek are masters of this grape variety, and no change here. Unreal wine."
- 94 pts, Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

After making Pinot Gris conventionally since 2002, I was fed up making the same boring wine. Not only did I loath to make it, I didn’t enjoy drinking it. I guess that energy flowed to the wine.

In 2013, I decided to try something different, and instead of trying to take the colour out, I would make it as I think it should be made. Wine is really risk and reward. I really didn’t like the grape so I decided to take some risks that we wouldn’t normally take. We began experimenting and each year we try push those boundaries a bit further.

So for 90% of the blend we: Hand pick into bins. As soon as it’s picked we foot stomp the bins to release the juice so it can be in contact with the skins. No sulphur is added. We then chill the bins down to 12 degrees and wait for fermentation to begin.Near the completion of ferment, we press straight into old white barriques to finish fermentation.

We make it this way to try get a balance between aroma and tannin ripeness. The stalks from the first treatment adds some fine tannins and obviously you get a lot more tannin from the second treatment. We try and find a balance in between depending on the year.

94 points - "Copper in colour, which is a good sign. Nashi pear, spicy musky perfume, a flicker of aniseed too. It’s juicy, but so balanced, with a light powdery texture and grip, a little blood orange, fresh strawberry, pear skin crunch, and a satisfying finish of excellent length. All just so. Hoddles Creek are masters of this grape variety, and no change here. Unreal wine." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Refreshing pinot gris with real class

The colour and mouthfeel leave you in no doubt that this is a pinot gris that has had some skin contact. And that's a good thing, as the textural mouthfeel balances the relatively high acididity beautfully, making for an interesting , delivcous and more-ish glass of wine.

    Yum

This is a good value pinot gris. If you are a fan of pink tinged pinot gris (think Derwent Estate) then you will enjoy this wine.

    The perfect Pinot Gris

I have started to enjoy a Pinot grid that has had a little skin contact and this one was well balanced and to my liking, highly recommend trying it.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
